REX 6000 has a new home
We've moved to our new server/host, and things appear to be working well. Shouldn't be any noticeable difference to the site for visitors. If things do appear amiss, let us know.
REX 6000 will remain in place (for now)
Thanks very much for the concerned emails and offers to host the site...we are making arrangements to ensure that the this site remains available to the amazing number of people who still find its contents useful.

REX Pro setup help on XP - new manual! (From Thomas)
"First a big hug for helping me setting up my sync of Rex Pro with Outlook XP on a Windows XP Laptop over PCMCIA. Your article on http://www.rex6000.org/Content/rex-os.htm helped me very much. Here's what I brought together after days of work with lots of failed attempts… (Web Page)

Case and Pen/Stylus option (From Ponnos)
For my rex I use the aluminium card holder sold at Muji on line:

![]()
It's the medium size one (5363599 Aluminium Thick Case 18-30 Cards) The rex fits perfectly, and I still have room to fit the pentopia pen once "resized". I discard the central (aluminium) part and put together the two black plastic pieces using one of the metal ends (the pin one).

REX and Lotus Notes syncing (From Michael)
I thought you might want to hear how I managed to sync my 6000 successfully with Notes R5. I was able to do this both on XP/Pro at Home and Windows 2000 at the office.
You need to have a good understanding of Notes and it is helpful if you have synced your Notes successfully with a Palm pilot before and understand that, but not essential.
1. Install the REX tools and the Intellisync for REX. I chose to download the solid version available from rex6000.org. I do not know if this is a must.
2. Verify that you can communicate succesfully to your REX via the REX tool. That makes sure your ports are configured correctly etc. I upgraded the firmware on mine, but I do not know if that is essential. (Editor's note: Do NOT upgrade your firmware - the firmware on this site is the same that is on your REX now.)
3. I installed the Intellisync for Yahoo from Yahoo site. I do this as I like the web access to info when on the road. I dont believe this affects the end result, but I wanted to mention it in case it had an impart.
4. Critical Piece I believe: Install Intellisync Gold. I used 5.02. This is not a free product. I had a copy I owned that works well for synching Notes with Palm PDAs.
5. Launch Intellisync for Rex.5A. Turn off the synch to REX.Net and save the config.
5B. Configure each item seperately to synch to Notes 5.0It is very important at this step that you open the Options dialog while choosing the Notes 5.0 connector. You must carefully be sure your Notes client password is correct and you should browse to each of the files it requires to be sure the filenames are absolutely correct. Capitalization matters! On my install the default capitiliation and paths were not correct before I did the browsing. If any of these items are wrong and you attempt to synchronize, you will not get any user friendly messages, you will just puke. For example in order to synch the memo/notepad item, I needed to go into Notes and create a Journal database which created a file that I could then go into the configuration of Intellisync REX and browse to. When this wasn't there I tried to sync the Memopas the whole thing puked.
REX vendors (Michael)
FYI, A froogle (froogle.com) search on rex 6000 brought up a number of vendors offering rex 6000 with the lowest price being 78.00.
The old days... (From Scott)
"I ran into your site after finding my old IR "grey triangle" and wondered if it can be adapted for use with the IrDA function on my Nokia phone. I guess not. Funny thing though, I have to download from my Nokia to an 8 yearold Cannon Innova laptop that HAS an IR port in able to get the data into my P4 desktop. I guess I'll have to buy an IrDA adaptor. Anyway, on to the point.
I bought an electronic Rolodex in 1989 and two or three years later bought the Electrodex. The software I got was "PC Link" and if you were very careful with the alignment, the transfers worked great. But as you pointed out there was no sync so whether at home or away I ONLY could add or edit information to the one of the three that was always at hand, i.e. the electrodex or I'd never know which one was up to date.
The only thing that I felt was poorly done (for it's time) regarding the software was the text and background colors which were awful and because of that a friend introduced me to debug and showed me how to change things.
Cheers - Ritchie"

Rex 3/5/3000/5000/5001 update. (From Tice)
An update to Tice's excellent REX page....for users of the REX various REX 3/5 versions, there isn't a better place to look for info and files than Tice's site.
"Let me inform you that my Rex 3/5 site at www.tice.i12.com has been updated a little bit. Within a few days all versions of all accessor sets will be available for download. Probably that is the last update: I don't have anything else to share with the Rex community (except my experiences). Anyway, I don't expect too much news... The last certainty has been disappeared with the recent changes at Starfish and the Component Install site.
Besides, my interests have changed to other platforms, so consider it as my final message to the community.
Regards, Tice"

New REX utility from the REX master. (From Chris)
"Hi all,
I've posted a little addin called "Mem" on my website. It simply displays several of the Rex internal database usage statistics, and also answers the classic question "Is this really a 2 MB Rex or not?"
Please see the readme for more info. If "Mem" seems to report accurately on both s of Rex-6000, I intend to turn it into a patch to the built-in Rex "Memory" applet.
New REX discussion forum created (From Todd)
A new REX forum (called, appropriately enough, "REX Forum,") has appeared somewhat magically (especially to those of use who aren't very technical.) :-)
It is threaded, and organized by subject area...
Thanks, Todd, for supporting the REX community.
Updated Not a spreadsheet released! (From JDF)
"Hi, all. Since madigan is complaining about lack of activity.........
1) NEW VERSION OF NOT A SPREAD SHEET (NSS) with a really GOOD readme file and new icon. This a a great little WORKSHEET program that you can configure for your own custum calculations. The README is really good (did I say that already?) Some minor bugs were fixed and you can now use more than one file instead of just the default. If you use it or have developed some function files, please post them at the forum.
2) The SOURCE CODE for NSS and MATH LIBRARY are also now available on the NSS page. Also some instructions for using it in emulator.
3) Added a GUEST MAP. WHY NOT PUT A PIN ON THE MAP TO INDICATE YOUR LOCATION!
4) Changed the FORUM. There is basically one list related to each addin that I have. Over the next week I will add the old posts into the new forum.
5) Changed web site but old link will still work.

Developer news: Updated emulator available. (From Chris)
From one of our leading REX development geniuses:
"Hi all,
I've posted an update to the Rex emulator files (RexFwUp.zip) on my website. It consists of new versions of the two files: RexFW1.out and RexFW3.out.
I was troubled by the fact that the emulator wouldn't let me debug into the Rex control panel applets, such as the "Memory" dialogs - it would always crash on the first attempt to display a dialog component - and I found that there were a few mis-translated bytes in the emulator firmware files, hence this update.
Specifically, load Daniel's latest emulator at:
http://www24.brinkster.com/rexdk/emulator.zip
Unzip it, then update it with my zipped files. I've tried emailing Daniel so he can update his site, but he seems to be away for now.
I'm hoping this is an improvement for Rex developers; let me know if I've broken anything with this fix!

Chris

Andy"Tip on REX battery life (From Woods)
A tip that isn't new, but is well worth repeating...
"Battery Life
I have discovered and confirmed over the last six months that unexpected warnings that "The batteries have less than 5% remaining." life are likely due to contact resistance buildup between the Rex holders and the battery and not true battery depletion..
The next time you get a low battery warning, using the stylus tip, GENTLY press in the notch closest to the center on each battery door and release. You will notice that the door moves inward slightly against a spring. Repeat this 10 times or so for each door. This action appears to burnish the contacts. Then check Controls/Power again. Just now I turned on my REX and got the 5% message. I followed my own advice and the recheck afterward indicated Good!. BTW, my lawyer says do this at your own risk. If the stylus goes all the way into the REX, look up GENTLY again.
I suspect this may vary with different brands of batteries which may vary slightly in OD and thickness. Regardless of brand, I always clean the new batteries well and rough them up a bit with 400 grit sand paper or something similar.
My next step will be to take the REX apart to learn if the battery contact tension can be safely increased. Has anyone done this before?"

Newton and REX together - two discontinued tech toys are symbiotic! (From Daniel)
"I think you'd like to know something I discovered today. I have been able to use my newton PDA as a dock station for my rex 6000. My laptop PC only has one pcmcia slot and I connect to the internet with a ethernet card, so I couldn't use the rex and connect to the internet at the same time to use the web sync tools. There is a program that bridges any PC card modem inserted in the newton to the serial port of this device, and the rex tools detected the rex in the serial port correctly.

Arkanoid Update! (From Simon)
"One more try: A new, hopefully working, version of the Arkanoid game has been released, 0.9.1. This version has been tested in the emulator, but not on real hardware (my computer healed itself - turned out that the VGA-card had uninserted itself, real computers of course can start anyhow but...). The game works in the emulator.
I'm not sure about the speed of the game - please tell me how it behaves on real hardware if you test it!
Changes:
* Changed the name of the level-file to Zarkanoid.txt instead.
* Maximum number of lives is now 5 (and default is 4)
* Runs in the emulator at least :-), applied some nasty tricks to have
it compile correctly with zccI'd like to thank l_delbert (probably not his/her real name, but ...) for the idea with Zarkanoid.txt.

New calendar display add-in! (From Markus)
"Hi. Since I (and obviously a lot of other REX users) need the week numbers for project planning, I put together a nice addin which does the following:
- displays 3 month on the screen, one week per column with the proper week number
- allows scrolling on different levels
- reads holidays from the calendar and displays them.Hope this tool is helpful not only for me. Please let me know if there are problems, bugs or if you have any suggestions. I tested it for a while, but... Have fun, Max."

Version 0.9 of the Arkanoid game has been released. Note that this is untested on the real hardware, and might not work, so only daring people should try it! Please report failures to me ([email protected]).
The changes from last version are:
* Ported arkanoid to the new libfe REX abstraction layer. Should be easier to extend now.
* More "realistic" ball bouncing
* New graphics (not sure if it's actually better now, but...)
* Misc. code cleanup
* Makefile is now a bit more intelligent, but also more UNIX specific
* Removed cvs logs

ebay REX units - check your memory. (From Bob)
"Just received my new Rex6000 bought on eBay Item #3001620451. It is listed as 2MB of memory, but only has 1MB. It appears that it is a 1MB unit that has been flashed with the upgrade, so so shows 2MB. Confirmed this by initializing it and uploading a single 512 kB file using Rex Tools. Rex Tools split this into 17 smaller files. It then showed 70% of memory full!!!"
A note to potential ebay REX purchasers - some (most?) of the units for sale there may be the 1 MB version. Nothing wrong with that, but it's good to know what you're getting. They may be reported as 2 MB models,
Developer News: New REX debugger (From Graham)
"I have released V1.0 of a debugger for the Rex.
See http://www.cobb.uk.net/Rex/Debugger/
This is to allow some limited debugging support on a running Rex. It is similar, in some ways, to the Emulator environment but it is quite limited.
The main features are:
- Lightweight debugger trap routines -- the minimum of code executes in the addin being debugged.
- Can examine and modify all CPU registers and memory locations.
- Can resume after a breakpoint or can exit the addin.
The main restrictions are:
- No breakpoints can be set from within the debugger. All breakpoints are created by placing calls to trap routines in the code being debugged. So, the addin being debugged has to be recompiled if you want to break somewhere else.
- The PC is shown but the instruction is not decoded.
- Single stepping is not available. The addin can be resumed after a breakpoint but you cannot step one instruction at a time.
- Screen contents are lost wen the debugger is invoked.
I found this useful when debugging the Stdio routines, which do not work in the emulator.
As always, comments, suggestions, bugfixes or improvements are always welcome. Note: I will be away for a few weeks holiday so I will not be responding to email for a few weeks."
Lode Runner add-in game (From Laurent)
"I just made today a Windows program that easily & quickly create and save levels. The game should be able to support between 40 and 50 levels depending on how I will be able optimize the source code (and save space). I put 4 players instead of the 3 originally planned. Please send any feedback & comments you have into the REX forum in the addins section. Thanks in advance. The 1.0 release of "Load Runner" for REX will come in the next coming weeks with the bugs solved (if any) plus also the source code and the Windows program to create your own levels.
The rule of the game? Pretty simple: you need to pick up all the hearts you can see before to go the next level. But you will have to jump or climb on laders to avoid the deadly moving lasers. And the speed of the lasers increases gradually level after level ... For the rest? well, I am sure you will figure out yourself.
One known problem: when you're finished playing Runner exit the game or power off your REX (otherwise your REX will stay on forever).
PS: Keep the REX community alive, guys! I tell you this already "old" micro PDA is still one the best out there ... I wish I could say the same about my only one year's old computer ... :-( "
And here's the add-in in a zip file with source code - thanks, Laurent!
Feedback on ebay REXs. (From Matt)
"Hi, just wanted to share my experience of getting a rex on ebay recently. Paid $60 for a "new" unit with business card fold case, and a plastic stylus. Came with good set of panasonic CR2016 batteries. Appears to be in good condition, undamaged, although the metal frame has a few scuff-marks (don't know if this is from previous use, or fact that none are retail packaged, probably from a 'bulk bin'). Person I bought it from, when asked where he got them, said something about a seller who had 700 of them, and wanted to unload them (I think I saw an email on your site a few months ago about that)....so, I suspect that some ebay retailers split them up and bought portions."
REXs for sale on ebay (From Ben)
"There's a stack of new Rexes been selling on eBay recently - top price of about $80, bottom price about $50. Some don't have a box - don't know what the deal is there..."
Maze add-in! (From Laurent)
"This second addin (I made it in less than 2 days). It's called "Maze" and the rule is the following:
1) select the maze you want with the button "+" (7 mazes are available)
2) memorize the path to the exit few seconds
3) press the buton "GO" and find the way to the exit in the dark now !
4) when finished click on the ball to see your scoreSource code is not optimized at all (it is a little slow) but easy to understand so I think it should be simple to anyone to improve the display speed technique, add new levels, ... or even reuse the code for another similar type of game.
Enjoy.

New add-in: week numbers (From Laurent)
"I have seen from the REX discussion forum that few persons wanted to have an Addin that gives the Week number (actually it's pretty usefull if you have/want to make weekly status report at work). So here is the addin (the very first one I made in a couple of hours)."

MAC OS X PCCard Driver for REX! (From Stuart)
"I have a preliminary version of a Mac OS X PC Card driver for the Rex6000 which allows it's use from VirtualPC on OS X rather than Classic mode. Anyone interested in trying it should email me and I will supply a copy. Built for Mac OS 10.2.X (Jaguar) only, will NOT currently work on earlier versions of Mac OS."
Battery warning! (From Meert)
"I bought some batteries (10) from this shop http://www.electronicaonline.nl/ but they're crappy. When inserted they already show up as poor. They switch between fair and poor, depending on the moment of activation in my Rex. (First as poor, then after a second as fair). So I do not recommend people in Holland to buy batteries from this shop. They sell a brand called "Kinetic". They probably got loads of them in China or Japan. They're worthless for me. Total cost of batteries and shipment: euro 10.50."

More case and stylus stories. (From Jack & Franco)
Jack: "I have uploaded some photo of my Rex cases at
(under Rex 6000 cases). The picture quality is not that good as they are taken with a lowly web cam.
Ever since I acquired my first Rex-3, I've been looking out for cases to carry and protect my Rex. I have 3 Rexes now (Rex-3, Rex-5 and Rex 6000) and half a dozen metallic cases.
The earlier cases are aluminum card cases that I could slip into my back wallet. Current cases that I'm using are almost as slim but made of stronger chrome or stainless steel for better protection. Somehow in this fourm, I have not seen cigaratte cases being mentioned for storing Rex. These cases are spacious, perhaps just slightly too big for the Rexes, but are very STRONG. Although personally, I prefer the slimmer and less conspicuous card cases, that didn't stop me from acquiring these solid cigarette cases.
I've also found an excellent stylus (a Pilot Pentopia for Sharp Zaurus SL-5000) in Japan that fit right into my card case. It has a bright orange stylus tip, a ballpoint pen and an extendable stem! Photos of these cases and the Pentopia stylus are in the abovementioned site.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!"
Franco: "I had a few Pentopia pens, of a previous version (i.e. without the extendable stem), and everything was fine: only, if you put too often and too tight the cap on the back side, the thread would break and the cap would not stay any more on the ball point side (that's whay I had a few of them...). So, be gentle with the cap!"
Lighted stylus for tapping in the dark. (From Bruce)
"I can already see the future. Once this website/bulletin board goes away, my REX will die and I'll be forced to convert to a Palm Zire. Ughh.
In the meantime, though, I found the solution to the lack of a backlight on the Rex - a stylus that has a bright, white light at the end (and, of course, easily turns off for daylight applications). I saw it mentioned in a computer magazine and found it at www.buy.com for only $6.95 (list is $13.99) with free shipping.
It's almost the exact same size as the stylus that came with my Rex, maybe just a scootch longer, but it fits very nicely in the Rex wallet.
On another note, it's been quite some time since anyone has mentioned a "cannot synch - missing DLL" problem. Just a reminder to all that this problem is solved by disabling something called "MAPI" in your web browser (please, do not ask me why something in the web browser should have anything whatsoever to do with a missing DLL that stops Rex from working - I have no idea. All I know is that it worked).
Happy holidays to all."

Happy New Year!
Welcome to 2003 - may the new year begin with hope, procede with good fortune, and end with happiness.
Some thoughts on REX development and a REX-sized camera. (From Drazen)
" I thought REX was about to die.. now I see there is a comunity :)))) Well, we produce an Content Management System and the idea could be:
"Create an platform like a mini SourceForge for Rex developpers"
Where:
- Every user could have his own account
- An unified form of presenting the add-ons
- The possibility to have one layout per developper to be able to use the content of the platform in the privat site of the developpers
- And yes, everything is free of charge
What do you think? [Developers - what do you think?!]
PS:
"I've doctored it to take business cards and a pen/stylus courtesy of my old Victorinox Swiss Card. Very simple to do... and now it really is the ultimate in protection and convenience. Now I just need to fix on the bottle opener and corkscrew... :)"
I have the Victorinox Swiss Card to and I found an digital camera "Axia EyePlate" from Fuji, which can easy fit into the Rex case. See www.smalcamera.com for further resellers (RadioShack and Oregon Scientfic)
But still looking for the bottle opener and corkscrew option :)))"

Developer News: REX game development library updated. (From Simon)
"Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 12:21:22 +0100
Hello! I've now had the possibility to test REX Adventure on the real REX6k, and it works. There is a problem with the binary-distribution, however. The problem is that the library-addin has not been created as it should (i.e. it's just a normal addin). I'll fix the distribution tonight or tomorrow.
In the meantime, a work-around is as follows:
copy advglib.b2 to advglib.bin
From the rexdk distribution (Projects/library/):
copy library.txt to advglib.txt
copy library.bmp to advglib.bmp
run makeaddin advrex(These are just the last steps from makelib.bat in the Projects/library/ example).
Sorry about the problems. My mistake. // Simon

Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 22:31:25 +0100
Ok. I've uploaded a version of REX Adventure working on the real hardware. It's available on my homepage:So now people can actually test it, if they want :-)"
REX 6000 source - any entrepreneurs out there? (From Greg)
An individual (Wayne) has contacted Greg and REX6000.org about a supply of REX 6000s that are available. Greg has exchanged messages with Wayne and ferreted out the details below. Please note - it is up to anyone who approaches Mr. House about this to confirm his credentials.
"Mr. House is looking for a reseller to buy his entire stock of 2,000 2MB REX 6000's at $52.00 each. He is not selling them individually. His business distributes discontinued inventory. This would be great for the REX community if we could find a good reseller."
Detailed information:
- Mr. House is looking for a reseller. He is not going to sell individual units. The price quoted is for the lot (2000 units).
- Price is ex factory but shipping cost per unit is "very low."
- Mr House is developing a business web site but it is not up yet.
- The units are 2mb Xircom REX 6000.

[email protected]"Developer News: New game development libary released! (From Simon)
"Hello! I'd like to announce the inital release of the "REX Adventure" adventure game library. REX Adventure is a REX library for writing Zelda/Monkey Island-style games (a mixture of both kinds), for running on the REX or on a host machine with libSDL. REX Adventure is actually two libraries:
- advlib/ - A graphics support library for REX Adventure. Draws maps and blits sprites
- advglib/ - (Notice the 'g' :-)) The actual adventure game library
Advglib depends on advlib, but advlib can be used without advglib. A "development environment" is also provided, that implements an abstraction layer between the REX-specific functions and the platform independent code. The library therefore is also available for libSDL on UNIX (possibly Windows) systems.
An example game is also provided. Screenshots from that can be seen on my homepage. The library is released under the GNU GPL, and can be downloaded from my homepage:
--------
Now for some things to watch out when you try it:
- The game is a bit slow still, but I hope to be able to speed it up sometime.
- See the INSTALL document before testing the game - you need to download two memos to the REX as well.
- I have only tried the library/game in the emulator (no access to my docking station right now). It works in the emulator, but if it does not work on the real thing, I suspect memo-reading...
- If someone would like to try to program for it, I'd be happy to help. Note that to compile the library, you might need to recompile z88dk/rexdk.
Have fun!

Possible REX Sources (From Greg)
"It's getting harder and harder to find a REX 6000 for sale these days. I just replaced the eBay logo on my page with few links for REX 6000 sources. These sites list vendors who probably still have them in stock. As I find more of these lists, I will add more links. Avoid Amazon.com for now, as the vendors there are taking advantage of the shortage in supply."
A quick check of some of the links showed Amazon (as Greg notes) a bad place to shop, showing used REX 6000s at $225 USD and up for the REX w/Serial, $245 USD for the USB version.
ebay (a fairly consistent source) appears to have the best availability and pricing, with REX 6000s ranging from $150 to $180 USD, with a few going for closer to $100.
Check out Greg's links and let us know if you are successful.

REX Rumor Central finally ending? (From Alan Henrik)
Alan posted this to RRC tonight:
"Just to let everyone know, I've decided to shut the REX Page down in the next few days.
REX Rumor Central has been a great discussion forum for an interesting product, and the best part about it has been the dedicated contributions of the users. You have taken a simple, unsophisticated web page and made it valuable by the quality of your contributions.
However, the web site has never paid for itself, and it has been a long time since I personally had a working REX. And obviously several parts of the site are severely out of date. Even if I did have a REX, this site would still be an expensive hobby, and would take a lot of maintenance time to keep up to date.
One option is to just shut down the site immediately, but I figured it would be nice to offer you all a chance to talk amongst yourselves for a few days first. I'm not looking to extend the life of the site, but am basically looking to avoid sinking more money or time into it. If anyone wants to buy the entire site and help me recoup some of my past expenses, that would be great, but it's probably too much to hope for, and it's not my goal. My goal is just to remove it from my task list, with a gentle transition to something else.
Rather than participate in a vigorous discussion on this, I'm likely to just check in after a couple days or so and read what people have written. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just pretty busy with other things right now, but I do need to simplify my life which includes getting the REX Pages off my plate. Hope you will all understand this.
Please note one important point: I am not looking for free hosting, or cheaper hosting. If that was the goal, I already have it elsewhere (my own home broadband connection; I could host at no additional cost). I'm just looking to simplify.
I know some of you have appreciated this forum a lot, and the expressions of appreciation have helped keep it alive -- but that's not what I'm looking for now. What would be great to see would be a migration of users from this site to another forum site, hopefully one as open and free and as high quality as you users have made this one to be, so you people aren't left in the lurch. Good luck!"
REX 6000s found in Malaysia. (From Mike)
"Good news for those staying in Malaysia. I recently picked up a Rex6000 (just the Rex and the leather case, no Dock etc etc) for around USD 55:
- The shop is called Komputown, they deal with used computers. They are located in Imbi Plaza in Kuala Lumpur. Imbi Plaza is the computer shopper's paradise in Kuala Lumpur.
- The Rex6000's are the 1MB models. I think there were 3-4 more available."
More REX journeys. (From Remco)
"Hi, Nice you've taken your rex to mount fuji.
As a student microbiology I take my rex6000 everyday into the Lab at my university where it allready survived a lot of shocks. In the weekend I'm a mountain (rock and ice climbing) guide. Every climb (altitude, prussure, degrees C, rope length, hardness of the route and a lot more since I've bought a new watch with hardbeatsensor, variometer and all stuff (ciclosport Alpin 5)) and wetherconditions of that day I put it into my REX."
REX availability. (From GM S.)
"When I attempted to order a Rex 6000 from www.ow.com.au on September 27, 2002, I was happy to promptly receive an order conformation. Days later, a rather cryptic email informed me that the product was no longer available. Shopping at eBay looks like it requires a rather large time and hassle factor, so I continue to seek a more conventional method of purchasing a Rex. Thanks for providing a useful information source about the Rex 6000. I wonder how large the average eBay price will have to get for the Rex 6000 before for Intel to reconsider their discontinuation of this unique PDA."
Cities and times on the REX. (From Vannon)
"I ran across a little anomaly that you probably already know about - if you sync your PC clock with the REX (through REX tools) it changes the time without modifying what you have put in for your home city. The home city just assumes the time and adjusts all other cities to accommodate. In my case, the home city was set to LA by default so when I synced, LA time became Tokyo time. The solution is obvious - change the home city to your local time, ignore whatever the REX is currently displaying and sync with PC. After that, all is right with the world - to include time." (Vannon is in Japan)

Blomus case turns up in the UK! (From Leigh)
"Hi, Thought I would share with your visitors that I have found the fantastic Blomus case in the UK. It is available from NEXT, a high street clothing store, for £5.99. The only difference is that it comes embossed with the NEXT logo. I have attached a couple of pictures of it in action. Cheers,"
Developer News: Updated Stdio library released. (From Graham)
"I have released a new version (V0.3) of the Stdio library. See
This version now implements buffered I/O so that memo reads and writes are no longer done one byte at a time. A few bugs are fixed as well.
And there is some documentation to show which functions are implemented and any differences from the standard Stdio library.
I think this library is now ready for real use. I would appreciate any feedback."
Developer News: New REX debugger released! (From Graham)
"I have released V1.0 of a debugger for the Rex. See
This is to allow some limited debugging support on a running Rex. It is similar, in some ways, to the Emulator environment but it is quite limited.
The main features are:
- Lightweight debugger trap routines-the minimum of code executes in the addin being debugged.
As always, comments, suggestions, bugfixes or improvements are always welcome."
The REX goes everywhere. Really - everywhere! (From Vannon)
"...without a doubt the Rex 6000 is the most addictive little thing to come into my life in years. I literally don't leave home without it - period. In July I climbed Mt Fuji (4000+ meters elevation) and the little puppy was right there in my pocket. I didn't do anything with it - maybe breathe oxygen-free air on it - but as I said, where I go, it goes."
Couldn't have said it better myself. Can anyone beat that for a REX outdoors adventure? What odd places have you taken your REX? Enquiring minds want to know, so tell us!
REX in Australia - twice reported. (From Otavio and Ben)

The REX anywhere else?
There are a lot of requests coming in lately for sources for the REX. (You can find them on ebay just about all the time.) If you know of any other sources, let us know and we'll pass the word along!
REX sources in Australia and Singapore - not found! (From Hugh)
"Just an update of your news entry about Rex 6000s being available in Australia: they're sold out! I tried to buy one but they told me they had no more. They're looking for new stocks but don't seem to have much hope.
Re Rostov's item about Singapore: I live in Malaysia and am frequently in Singapore and can tell you there are no Rexs available at any of the outlets at Changi airport there. I've combed all of the other places I know in the city, including Sim Lim Square and the Funan Centre without success. I think they've disappeared completely from Singapore. I've also hunted in Hong Kong and various other Asian city without success."
Developer News: New memo writer for the REX emulator
"Greetings!
I've reinvented the wheel yet another time and made a memo-writer for the emulator called writememo. It's loosely based on DavRex MemoWriter but is implemented in ANSI C, so it runs on Linux/UNIX as well as Windows. The REX addin also tries to validate that the written memo is correct.
It is released under the GPL and is available on my homepage:
http://www.student.lu.se/~etn97ksi/sim_home/rex.html
Report bugs etc to me at [email protected]."
Unforseen capabilities in Intellisync. (From JP)
"Rex 6000 and Outlook 2000 RE-initialisation and RE-sync problem.
My previous post on this subject was met with a deafening silence. I felt like I had farted in a lift.
Anyway, for the record I solved the problem. I uninstalled and then reinstalled Intellisync for Rex (version 1.01). All my translators reappeared, and what's more this time they didn't disappear when I reintialised my Rex.
An interesting aside - at one point I had my Psion connected to the PC, and when I ran Intellisync for Rex and synchronised to the Agenda file from my Psion 5mx, Intellisync actually connected to the Psion AS WELL and synchronised successfully. I was VERY impressed."
Developer News: Updated libraries from Graham!
"I have rebuilt my libraries and tools with the latest RexDk, incorporating the new FindLib. This means they should work properly if loaded into the new holes made available by Chris's Bgone utilities (although I have only tested them using Adder slots).
The versions are:
- GRClib V1.4 -- This also adds grclibmain.h (see docs or a separate mail message).
- MemoIO V0.4 -- Just rebuilt, no functional changes
- Registry V0.6 -- Just rebuilt, no functional changes
As always, you can find them from my Rex page:
Rebate confirmed legitimate by Intel.
An Intel source confirmed today that the REX.NET rebate program is legitimate.
Well it sure seems for real... (From Greg S.)
"I just checked out the header information on the e-mail sent about the REX Rebate program. There are no suspicious indicators to indicate that this came from a scammer. The e-mail's IP address is also CPG, and none of the information is forged. Taking the registration information for the web site into consideration as well, this looks legit."

REXDK updated and at new URL. (From Daniel)
Late reporting this event - from about 10 days ago!
"Hi all,
The new rexdk release is available along with a new website and a new domain name (although the old ones should work too). For further information see the readme file.
See the story from a few days ago - Daniel strong recommends that you recompile your projects w/the new REXDK.
$20USD REX.NET rebate announced.
Messages have been received here (from many, many people - thanks!) regarding a $20 rebate that is evidently being offered to REX 6000 owners who use the REX.NET site before it was discontinued. There is no way to tell immediately if this is legit, but it does appear to be the real deal. A question has been submitted to an Intel source via email to confirm.
Reactions have ranged quite a bit - here's a small sampling:
- "Do you guys no anything about this rebate scheme or is it a con of some sort?"
- "...isn't that cool?!"
- "Apparently Intel has been shamed into offering US$20 rebates to all previous users of the REX.net service...I'm curious to see if they are doing this to avoid class action lawsuits and if perhaps redeeming the rebate will change my potential status in such a suit.. "
- "Seems like they -do- care about the users. At least, a little. :)"
- "Got this today...just about blew me off the chair"
Here's the information...
From the rebate web page:

Developer News: Important REXDK update and suggestion. (From Daniel)
"I've updated the rexdk with the latest additions...developers of 'big' addins (using libraries) should rebuild their projects with this release. The point is that old addins using libraries can't find libraries in the new firmware-holes like opened up by CalcBGon etc. So, for example, currently it isn't possible to load the MiniData libraries into the CalcBGon firmware-holes. In fact it is possible, but the main addin wouldn't find them, so pretty useless."
Battery source in the UK. (From Matt)
"If you are still looking for CR2016 suppliers you will find
hard to beat.
They supply Maxell CR2016s at £1.75 each, and £1.50 each if you buy two or more. P&P is included and the goods arrive the next day."
Another REX Source - "down-under." (From Ed)
"After countless hours of searching for a good deal for REX 6000, i think i nailed it. I just bought a brand new REX6000 with a USB cradle and two storage cases Australia all for $133. For more details visit:
Remember that the exchange rate is 1USD=1.83AUD. The service was reliable and for about $20 i got the package in under three days. I am not sure if you can beat this deal."
So options still exist out there - anyone else find any good sources for the REX 6000, give us a shout!

Best wishes"Considering they were selling for as low as $60 on ebay (where prices have risen as well!) several months ago, things really have changed. I'm recieving a lot of "where can I buy a REX" emails lately - supplies seem to be dwindling. Let us know if you know of any sources for the REX 6000.
RPN Calculator 2.0 - major upgrade! (From Georgy)
"RPN Calculator 2.0. Let's call it Alpha release now.

Feedback:
"Unbelievable! RPN Calc has sooooo many functions in 16K!!" (From GPF)
Update from Singapore. (From Rostov)
" I'm writing to update on the situation here in Singapore. Recently I'm trying very hard to get a Rex6000 to replace my palm (been a palm user for 5 years), but after following your site's links for Singapore :
1) Challenger in Sim Lim Square is no longer operational since somewhere 1-2 months ago from now. As such, their only main branch is in Funan Center (North Bridge Road), and a visit there yielded no remaining stock.
2) After covering the 4th to 6th storeys in Sim Lim Square (front and back alleys), I failed to find any Rex 6000 units either.
3) Weitnauer Electronics didn't pick up any calls for the past few days concerning the Rex 6000. Because it is located within the Duty-free shops within the Singapore Changi International Airport, I can't go in without checking in.
I was born and live in Singapore all my life, so I'm still roaming around looking for the Rex 6000. Even the 2nd hand market is pretty dry.
Interestingly, the USB cradle for the Rex 6000 was found in only one shop in Sim Lim Square, 4 boxes, S$25 each (US$16)."
We're on the (Blomus) case again! (From Blomus, Inc.)
"RE Blomus card case (from Ralf):
There recently (end of May) were 2 guys named Peter and Peter discussing about the Blomus business card case holding the Rex 6000. The one @ letterfolders is the same the other Peter purchased @ Staples. The card is available in several stores within the US. On www.blomus.com you can search for a local dealer or you can contact the American subsidiary company SKS USA in Illinois. Here at SKS design, the manufacturer of the Blomus products
We thank you for the publicity. None of us had the idea of sitting on the product to test its quality.
Regards Blomus - Germany"
I like my humor dry, and Ralf from Blomus served it up perfectly! Let's hope the tradition of sitting on products leads to more great discoveries like this one!!
For more Blomus/REX pics/info see here on our REX Cases page.
Interesting observations and questions. (From Dan)
"Prices & Intel: Looks like prices on eBay are up for Rex6000s! I bought one 6 months ago for $60, but they are now going from $90 to $130! This must mean demand is up!
I wonder if there's any way to get Intel to take notice and consider offering and supporting the product again. I love my Rex6000 but I hate the fact that its a dead-end product. Yes, I know there's a thriving community out there, but in the end if its not a supported product, it will die as new operating systems and software comes out that oleaves it behind.
Has anyone thought of any way to contact Intel's marketing folks to convince them that this is a viable product? Everyone I show it to wants one until I tell them that its discontinued. I think a lot of people are getting sick of their bulky expensive "handheld computers" that they only use for contacts and calendars anyway. They see the Rex6000 and see the value in putting it in your pocket to carry wherever you go without your pocket sagging.
Is there anything that can be done with Intel or is this just a pipe dream?"
Future projects to get excited about... (From JDF)
"There does seem to be a some new folks coming into the rex. As far as downloads of my addins go, there was a drop in downloads but since about 2 months ago there has been a little increase and even some feedback by email from these new folks. That was refreshing! I also think that some folks are tired of the large devices for just addresses and calendars. If you load the rex with CMEMO and GPF's weather report and stock quotes, folks just can't believe this little device does all that! (you could add UCREX too of course!) They see it and they want it...but they are afraid of a deadend product.
....I have 3 projects in mind....
(In this order).
- Get the bugs out of NSS (Not-a-spreadsheet).
- To rexspense: Add decimal points; Add export to memo file in CSV.
- Mess around with GOLFCARD using the GRCLIB for reading/writing memofiles.
I probably won't get very far....time is limited....but Chris's recent work and Dan's promise to update the rexdk has inspired me a little bit. And....she's on vacation.
I also will be releasing all my source code for all my addins around next week sometime."
Cmemo 1.1 released! (From Chris)
"I have now posted cMemo 1.1. The original reason for this cMemo update was so cMemo and its library addins could all be loaded together using CalcBgon or ClokBgon - and I was hoping to get this simple update released last Friday. Well, one thing led to another, and ... cMemo is now 3 addins (cMemo, cMemoB, and cMemoC) plus Graham's Registry addin library. So it is still a good fit using ClokBgon.
Please see the readme for more details. For current users of cMemo 1.1, simply load the new cMemo, cMemoB, and cMemoC.rex addins into your Rex."
Free batteries? (From Steve)
"I bought my last set of batteries at Radio Shack. They're normally $5 canadian each; pretty expensive. However RS has started offering warranty on these batteries for $1.50. What these means is if the battery stops working for any reason within a year, they'll replace them for free. I couldn't believe so I asked to make sure and yes if you drain the battery through normal usage they'll replace them!
My Rex uses the batteries like clockwork every two months. So for $6.50 I'm really getting 6 batteries. Thats just over one dollar per battery.
I don't know if all RS's are doing this or not, but thats definately something to check out!"
Chris releases updates to his "must have" REX toys! (From Chris)
"Hi all,
I've posted CalcBgon, ClokBgon, and an updated WebBgone. Please see the readme for each addin before using.
Note that CalcBgon not only lets you replace the Rex calculator, but also lets you store 2 additional addins "under" it. Similarly ClokBgon replaces the Rex "Clock"/world-map function, and lets you store 3 additional addins "under" it. These additional "underneath" addin slots are great for the libraries that the newer addins need.
The catch is that I am just today publishing the new FindLib routine which other addin developers will need in order to utilize these "xBgon" slots for libraries. For example, I'm already using Georgy's RPN calculator in the "Calc" slot, but it won't find his mathlib addin in one of the slots under Calc until he rebuilds the calculator with the new FindLib." For now, it works okay with mathlib in Extras or Adder.
Same thing for cMemo, which I'm using in the "Clock" slot on my Rex. To store the 2 libraries it needs under the Clock slot requires a new version of cMemo - later today...
Sorry if this is too confusing; when you run these new "Bgon" addins it will become more obvious. I hope!"
...and, some good feedback:
"Hi Chris,
1. Thanks for the explanation about cMemo 1.0. installation and all the new "begone" patches.
2. You wrote in WebBgone Version 0.2 ReadMe:
"However, I never got around to creating a WebBgone un-installer, since it is a simple matter to reload the Rex firmware if you REALLY want to regain the original Rex Web function.
Note that the RexTools program comes with an addin named "wmlv100.rex" which is nearly the same as the original Rex Web function. Using WebBgone to load this addin essentially restores the Rex to original condition, except for the fact that the original "W" icon is not restored."
I never used the Web feature so I replaced the original firmware Web browser with CalPlanner once WebBGone 0.1 beta was released and I have been using CalPlanner ever since. Later on, being intrigued by all the interesting discussions about the Web sync I downloaded wmlv100.rex into Rex EXTRAS menu and successfully synced the Web content using Web2Rex 1.5 and VRexNet 1.3 and never had any problems. Thanks to Laurent Debert for Web2Rex 1.5.
Updates to Greg's MailtoNotes Outlook macro. (From Greg)
"I just updated the Outlook macro "MailToNotes", on my web site. The changes are just tweaks here and there to improve its stability and fix some strange behavior (like closing open e-mail windows when it's running.)
Go to the "got net" page, scroll down, and click the "macro" link in the "resources" box to download the zip file.
Rex.mamy.to sync tools. (From Yiming & GPF)
"Hi jianpan, managed to create the stock chart and synced succesfully. thanks a lot for your wonderful site. will try the general module, but it certainly looks complicated.
for those who are not aware, jianpan created a site to grab and prepare web content for http://rex.mamy.to jianpan's

Some battery deals!
"best battery buys are @

"A local Home Depot just dropped the price of Duracell 2016 and 2025 batteries to $1.18 each. This is the best retail price I've seen, yet. I don't know if it's just this (new) store, or the whole chain..." (From Greg)
Trouble syncing notes? Try this! (From Greg)
"I just went through the last week without being able to synchronize my Notes. Intellisync would report that it couldn't write to the REX, and it would try again next time. Here's how I fixed it:
- Go into REX Tools and DELETE all of the notes/memo files. Be careful to delete notes only (they all have the same icon.)
- Go into Intellisync, make sure all of the confirmation options are on for Notes/Memos, and sync.
- When Intellisync asks you to confirm the changes (mostly deletions, yikes!), hit the "Re-Sync" button.
This makes Intellisync reload a fresh copy of all of your Notes from Outlook into the REX, and sync will work once again!
Great news for rex.mamy.to web sync'rs - new web content site Beta available! (From GPF)
"I think it's the time for me to stop creating new modules and put my site into public beta. Please visit http://home.attbi.com/~ceciliachen/rex.html and follow the link to Rex Content Provider Public Beta.
This website is designed to generate various types of web content that can sync into REX via rex.mamy.to. Currently there are 4 modules available: Generic, Graphical Weather Report, Stock and Avantgo. http://www.ceciliachen.com:8080/rex6k/Help.aspx have brief description on each module.
Please let me know if you find any problems. Thanks."
Internet image conversion utility for rex.mamy.to sync . (From GPF)
"I have posted a small utility here (http://home.attbi.com/~ceciliachen/rex.html). It can convert an image on internet into REX format so you can copy/paste to rex.mamy.to. This tiny program(8K) needs the 20M .NET runtime. You can get the runtime by using Windows Update."
Clearly, GPF has been busy...great work to support continued robust content for websync for the REX!
Birthday add-in adds a language. (From Hernan)
"Birthday addin is now available for Dutch Outlook users at: http://www.orgmf.com.ar/condor/rex6000.html"
For more on the Birthday add-ins (there are several versions!) see here on our Add-ins page.
Cmemo 1.0 updated again! (From Chris)
"I've posted an updated cMemo.rex with a couple of early bug fixes:
- cMemo 1.0 was hanging in the menu if you had more than 99 memos!
- Scroll "thumb" (the thing you click & drag on the scroll bar) was erratic after being dragged.
I've taken "programmer's license" and NOT upped the version number - it's still version 1.0. If you've already installed 1.0, no need to re-install - just delete the cMemo addin, and load in the new cMemo.rex."
Update to Meert's web sync content-grabber page. (From Meert)
"Thanks to Rich (blackmanx) there's a new version of my content grabbing page for http://rex.mamy.to.
Here's the explanation from Rich:
Meert's content grabber allows you to select just portions of a page for content creation. If you use Meert's Content Grabber to create content, you should be aware that V2.1 is now available. The code it produces to grab the page is far more robust (it includes error messages and tries to protect against bad HTML) and it allows you to add a title and a timestamp. Meert says he has coppied the new code to everyone's directory, it should say "Version 2.1" at the top of the index page when you click on it. In order to take advantage of it, you will need to regenerate your own content code:
- Rename your php file to a txt file.
- Take a look in the txt file to get your start and end tags
- Delete the txt file
- Click on the index.php file
- Verify you're running v2.1
- Enter the new tags, urls, etc.
Couple of things:
1. The new version will start the search for the "end text" AFTER it finds the "Start text" (avoiding those annoying blank pages.
- End text is now optional (if you don't specify it, it will just grab to the end of the page)
- If either start or end text are not found, it grabs from the begining/end of the page.
- Meert's content grabber is available at: http://meert.kicks-ass.net/rex/wml/"
Cmemo 1.0 released! (From Chris)
"Hi all, I have posted cMemo version 1.0 on my website. It now takes 2 addin slots, plus a 3rd slot containing Graham Cobb's Registry library. Any or all of the 3 may be loaded into Adder; the main addin (cMemo.rex) may also be loaded to the Rex main menu using WebBgone.
Please see the ReadMe.txt for detailed installation instructions: you must execute a cMemo installation addin before using cMemo 1.0.
Please let me know right away if you have problems with this new release, at [email protected]."
Chris is the author of some of the most useful and creative add-ins, tools, and firmware patches for the REX, including Adder, CalPatch, WebBgone, Dockpatch, etc. (See here for more on Chris' add-ins.) If you want to read memos or ebooks on your REX (with page scrolling and bookmarks!) , Cmemo is the update for you!
REX shopping addendum. (From Dominic)
"Just for some info. I bought the last rex 6000 from mypc21.com about a week ago. And PCMall and eCost both have "Please call us" as far as units in stock go. I have always found this to mean they are out but expecting more. I doubt they're getting more."
Rex.net & Xircom.com back up again. (From QC Tang)
"Just went to rex.net and xircom site, they are still alive."
So the problems with the sites a few days ago were more likely related to technical problems. Hmmmm. Did no one (at Intel) notice until Domnic's discovery was posted here?!
REX 6000 shopping experience. (From TeeJay)
"I recently bought a new Rex 6000 to replace a broken Rex 3000 and though I would share the information I collected about availability and prices.
Sadly, some of the U.S. outlets listed on the Rex6000.org site no longer appear to sell the Rex 6000. I found only three online retail vendors which claim to have the Rex 6000 in stock:
- MyPC21.com ($89.99)
- PCMall.com ($98.00)
- eCost.com ($98.99).
These packages all include the serial docking cradle. Prices are exclusive of shipping and any applicable tax. I have no experience with any of these vendors. The RCSeshop.com site is down for "maintenance," but you might try calling their Manhattan store at 212-949-6935 to see if they still stock the Rex 6000.
I ended up buying a new unit on eBay. There are two eBay sellers who have a supply of new, sealed Rex 6000s and post auctions on a regular basis. All include the serial docking cradle. The winning prices on new units during the period in which I was bidding ranged from $66.00 to $102.50. I paid $71.00 plus $15.00 shipping. You have to be patient in order to get the lowest price. If you don't want to wait, the eBay seller from whom I purchased (tessiedef) also makes the units available at a set "Buy-It-Now" price of $85.00 plus $12.50 shipping. I would post a direct link to the listing here, but I'm not sure that is allowed. I had no problems at all with this seller and received my Rex 6000 right away.
It seems that the best online prices on a new Rex 6000 including shipping are at MyPC21.com and on eBay. I assume that prices for used units on eBay should be lower than those for new units. I decided that having a sealed package was worth extra to me.
If you need a USB cradle, they are also available on eBay, but the lowest price I found online was at ComputerGeeks.com (only $4.25 plus shipping). Note that this does not include the USB cable which could run you $15.00 or so at Radio Shack. I happened to have a cable on hand, so I ordered a cradle from ComputerGeeks. They initially sent me a serial cradle by mistake but corrected the error quickly. If you do not have the right cable, you might be better off finding a USB cradle with cable included on eBay."
Avantgo websync for your REX via Rex.mamy.to. (From GPF)
"Just finished the most complex module of my website. There's one thing I envy Palm users most. There are lots of websites designed to be used on a Palm device for them. Avantgo is one of the best among those. The module I implemented is essentially an internet spider that can crawle a Avantgo site and convert it into REX readable format. For testing purpose I have created several content "Avantgo - BBC", "CNN", "CNNfn", "BusinessWeeks", and "PCWORLD.COM" under Test category at rex.mamy.to.
I have been testing this module for several days. But it's still in beta stage and may generate invalid content causing sync errors. Only subscribe them if you volunteer to be a beta tester :)"
Updated CMemo nearing release! (From Chris)
"I am doing my final testing today of cMemo 1.0, with several new features and no more buggy "ini" file crashes. It takes 2 addin slots, plus a third slot for Graham's Registry library. I'll try to get it out today - will post here when ready."
REX.NET and XIRCOM.COM down for the count? (From Dominic)
"I went to rex.net and noticed it was completely gone, replace with some portals site. Also I think xircoms site may be down as well."
It appears that Intel may have swallowed the final bit of Xircom.
Web2Rex update. (From Laurent)
"Yahoo just changed the layout of its web site just after web2rex was released. Here are the customization of the tags you may want to do have the news working again (maybe you already figured out the changes to do by looking at the help)
* If you download the "technology news" you need toreplace the original tag "Computers and Internet" with "]More Science"
* If you download the "sport news" you need to replace its previous tag "Internet Broadcast" with "]Photo [" (without the "" and with a space character right after Photo)
RPN calculator add-in updated - 1.6 available! (From Georgy)
"The version 1.6 at my site has some small fixes/changes.
This is a simple RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) calculator. (RPN means it's stack-based and you first enter numbers on the stack and then operate on them. So, in order to divide 20 by 5 you first enter 20, then enter 5, then order: divide!) It has a stack of three numbers, 2 memory cells, 40 storage cells, 40 unit conversions, all usual math operations, 11 or 12 decimal digits precision (exponent -38 to +38), input and display in hexadecimal notation. Error detection/report is rather primitive because of the memory limitations. The calculator uses math functions from a separate math library addin.
Any suggestions/corrections are welcome!" Please email Georgy with any comments!
REX availability in the UK (and maybe EU?). (From Arran)
"Just got a Rex 6000 from expansys.com, manchester, for £94 inc. carriage. 17 July 02. Their Site says they have between 10 and 49 in stock."
RPN calculator add-in - finally here! (From Georgy)
"It's a very fresh release so I may be fixing it and updating these days. But it works and it's quite usale as-is. :)
Any suggestions/corrections are welcome!" Please email Georgy with any comments!Great work, Georgy! This has been an oft requested add-in, and will make many REX users very happy. Enjoy Georgy's RPN calculator. You can also find it here: http://www.geocities.com/yru2l8/Rex6000/.
Update to the Battle add-in. (From Paul)
"Hey! No one asked for it, nor would I think that anyone still uses it, but I updated the Battle add-in. An annoying bug was fixed: no longer can you encounter the same exact creature twice in a row with the exact same results.
You can get it at http://home.sprynet.com/~pmc23/downloads.html.
Feedback is welcome! Has anyone played it lately??"
Web2Rex 1.5 released! (From Laurent)
"After the loss of the source code of Web2Rex several months ago, I finally bring back to life Web2Rex with
this version 1.5. Unzip it anywhere and click the "REX Info" button to know more about what you can do and how.Hope the REX communitity will enjoy it."
Laurent's excellent Web2Rex program allows downloading web content to your REX, including astrology, driving directions, email, movies, news, stock quotes, and weather! Enjoy!
REX 5000 site up and running again. (From Tice)
"I'm glad to announce that my site is up and running again at http://www.tice.i12.com. The content is still the same as in March, but I have plans to update it."
Netherlands battery source. (From Christiaan)
"Here's an addition for your Battery Vendors list. For CR2016 Batteries in The Netherlands you could give it a try at Dixons."
REX Rumor Central up and running again. (From Chris)
"FYI - I was surprised to get Majek's email digest of RRC this morning (July 1), showing two entries from June 8, 2002. Sure enough, tried the old RRC link, it's back!"
For those interested in a REX discussion site with subject threading and many more message options, The REX Zone is a great place to look.
CR2016 source where the price is right. (From Philippe)
"Glad to see that the REX is still going strong. I just wanted to let you guys know about a cheap source of CR2016. sunnbattery.com has them for 0.50$/each, that 's right half a buck! (10 minimum order, reasonable ship too)."
According to the web site this is a "sale price" and the batteries are Sony or Panasonic brand (whichever are in stock). Panasonic are 90 mAh (the highest available), and Sony are 85 mAh, so either would be a good choice.
Win 2000 installation tip. (From Fredrik)
"I also have a tip for installation on win2k. I failed to install it despite spending one day plus support from our pc-support people.
When installing the device drivers (USB serial port driver), windows claims to have found a better device driver (c:\winnt\inf\oem8.inf) than the one provided with the rex. When installing with this one the cradle fails to work. The workaround was to rename this file to something else (change suffix .inf to something else). This makes windows not able to find this file anymore and forces it to use the Xircom file instead and then it works!)"
All content removed from REX.NET. (From Fredrik)
"The download of 1.01 has also moved from rex.net...."
At some point (Recently? Haven't been watching closely!) Intel has shifted pretty much all REX 6000 information and downloads to the Intel site. The REX.NET site now only contains a very short general information FAQ and links to Intel's support site, rex6000.org and rex.mamy.to. See the REX FAQ on this site for a listing of the Intel links and phone numbers for REX 6000 support.
Batteries, redux.

New REX discussion forum - "The REX Zone" available. (From Dave)
"This old board has been looking for it's purpose in life. :)"
Words that announce the opening of a new REX discussion web board that can serve us well in replacement of REX Rumor Central (RRC). There have been multiple emails from REX users recommending this forum as a new home for REX discussion on the web, and it does look good. The REX Zone is free of ads, provides message threading, search capability, and discussion categories - features we all wished that RRC offered!
Check it out! And thanks to Dave for providing a forum for REX discussion.

REX w/USB on XP - no problems! (From Denny)
"This week I have made a clean Windows XP install and just wanted to tell you that the installation of Rex drivers and other Rex software went without ANY problems. I did not even have to go through any of the procedures that other people on your site have recommended. I installed it from the 1.01 version of the Installation CD-ROM bundled with my Rex. Plugged the cradle in USB, Rex into cradle and CD into CD-drive. Followed the instructions on screen (and choose to install drivers altough they were not signed).
Procedure:
- Plug in USB Rex cradle.
- Plut in Rex6000 into the cradle.
- Choose automatic installation. I believe it choose that for me when I inserted the CD.
- Choose the driver in <cdrom>:\win2k
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 three times. First and secund run seems to install the same thing, the third run install something else.
- Driver installation complete. Reboot.
- Install sync software."
Others have not been so lucky - see our Operating System page for USB XP install tips if your installation doesn't go as smoothly as Denny's.
Update released for MiniTetris (From Roo)
"After saying I wouldn't upgrade Tetris again, there's a bug! I had optimised the code slightly but stopped Rex going to sleep when you press pause. This problem is now rectified (v 1.2.1!!) - download from www.fiendishcat.com/rex."
Need RRC fix? (From Greg)
"...you can still search RRC through Google, and view the results through Google's cache. Add "site:www.linkmagnet.com" to your search query on Google, or use the RRC search box from my site."
Yes - Rex Rumor Central (RRC) is down.
REX Rumor Central is currently down. We are in contact w/the domain owners to determine if they are going to continue RRC, or finally end it. In case RRC does not come back we are exploring options to provide an alternate REX discussion forum.
In the meantime, if you have questions or a yen to talk REX, the PDA Street REX forum is available at:
This is a relatively active forum that is threaded and has searchable archives, though it does have a fair amount of ads.
Developer News: 8K add-in barrier may not be (From Benjamin)
"I'm sure others must have tried this, but it's not particularly documented, so here are the results of an experiment I just performed.
I created a 13.6k rex addin by taking a smaller addin and tacking some data on the end.
I then loaded it into my rex (drag'n'drop into rextools v1.1.1.15), which reported it as using "2 Block" (instead of 1 Block). It appeared in rextools as a program, not a memo, and showed up in the rex's extras screen as normal. The memory control panel on the rex lists the extra as using 16k (instead of 8k).
...Clearly further testing is required with larger (3+ page) addins, and a multiple large addins, but here's some wild speculation: 1) All of the 128k from address 100000 to 11FFFF is for addins. 2) Addins can be any size up to some unknown. 3) Clearly if your average addin size is more than 2 pages, you'll be able to store fewer than 8 addins. 4) Pages of a large addin are always stored contiguously.
I'd be interested if anyone has any evidence that agrees or disagrees with any of the above. It should at least make the somewhat cumbersome packing of "asteroids" et al unnecessary."
Just one of the many interesting subjects being discussed on the REX Developer Mailing List provided by Henrik (who also hosts this site - thanks again, Henrik!). One can only be thankful and impressed by what our developer community has accomplished, and amazed at what they are thinking about...
WinXP install w/USB cradle - three step approach. (From Al)
"This mail link on your web site says to "let you know," so here I am. I installed Windows XP Pro in January and was unable to get my Rex 6000 USB Cradle installed. So, I said "to hell with it" and just let it sit idle all this time.
I finally tried again and I thought you might want to know that I had to use a combination of THREE suggestions on your web page. [Our Operating Systems page. Ed.] First, I did as JOHN suggested and made the entry in the registry to prevent the blue screen problem. In concert with that, I ran the Xircom installer file in compatibility mode as suggested by YVES.
The install went without a hitch but when I rebooted and WinXP tried to install the drivers, I couldn't get it to recognize that the drivers were already in the Windows directory. So, picking up on something MYRON said, I put the driver files in the root directory of my C: drive, which means it's "in my path," and the setup finished without a hitch.
I have since been able to run the software to setup, configure and synchronize my Rex with my Outlook 2000. Thank you!"
Thanks to everyone who has shared their success storys and steps on all things REX - this is just one example of the many emails that arrive from grateful users. Your help really does make a difference!
An interesting new toy coming from Citizen. (From Zmcnulty)
Zmcnulty, "our man in Japan" who provided the Japan-side coordination for the DS2 case purchase, has found an interesting page on the Citizen site. No translation yet:
Updates to MiniData and Tetris. (From Roo)
"I've released an upgraded version of MiniData (v1.1) - several of the bugs in the original are sorted, and there are a few new features.
I'd like to thank everyone who gave me feedback on the program - without such support, I would probably have never got round to developing it further.
I've also posted an upgraded version of MiniTetris - the high score is now permanently stored so you can waste even more battery power trying to beat your previous best!
Both programs can be downloaded as usual from
MiniTetris is a great REX games, and MiniData users have been very vocal about the usefulness of MiniData - check these two add-ins out!
Blomus case info and pictures. (From Peter R. and Peter M.)
"You recently added a tip from somebody named Peter (another Peter, not me) regarding a stainless steel case designed by Blomus and available at Staples. I have not been able to find the case on the Staples web site, but did see what I think is the same card case at www.letterfolders.com for $19.99. In particular, see http://www.letterfolders.com/blomstainste.html , with a nice large picture at http://store3.yimg.com/I/letterfolders-office-equipment_1688_658694 .
"The case will only accept upto 1/8" diameter stylus." (Peter R.)
See our REX Case Vendor's page on our site for more pictures and information.
Batteries in the UK. (From Nick)
"Maplins, a UK chain like RadioShack (only a lot better) carries CR2016s in stock at £1.99 each. There's stores in most cities. Farnell, a UK electronics distributor, sells them at £1.40+VAT each and also posts out free of charge over around £10. http://www.farnell.co.uk. They also have web presence for many different countries. They're based in Leeds and have a trade counter to pick up from - that's what I did. Regards."
REX Keyboard?! (From Greg)
"Check out the picture: http://gregsearle.tripod.com/rex_hardhack.html#input Yes, you're dreaming... It's not real..."
Too bad it isn't real - looks like a fun idea if someone has a little free time and a lot of technical know-how!
Problems with TrueSync Desktop install on Win XP resolved. (From Ira)
"Installing True Sync Desktop on Windows XP. I found the answer to my own question in a Google search...I have found it also worked for Truesync Desktop:
When I try to install for the first time, the following message appears:
Msg: "Severe This installation has detected that a previous installation or un-installation requires you to restart your computer"
Solution:
- Reboot your system
- Look for a file named Wininit.ini, in either your WinNT or Windows folders.
- If you find this file, rename it to Wininit.old
- Try the Sidekick install again."
Note to REX 6000 users: TrueSync Desktop is a REX 3000/5000 program.
Another REX case idea! (From Peter)
"I picked up a blomus calling card case at a local Staples. It's stainless steel and looks like a large flatten Zippo lighter. The Rex 6000 fits with a little room to spare. A litte felting would probably help keep it from rattling around. The case is strong enough to sit on without any deflection. Perfect for when you need a lot of protection. It was only $9.99. You should be able to get it in Europe as it's made by sks design GmbH. A web link www.blomus.com is listed on th packaging."
REX 5000 and Win XP - Detailed "How-To." (From Skip)
One of the most popular questions of late has been "How can I get my REX Pro/5000/5001 to work with Win XP?!" Thanks to Skip, we now have some detailed instructions and the necessary files all in one place.
See the Win XP section of our Operating Systems page for the files and instructions. Let us know if you have any updates, corrections, etc.
Developer News: An update to the update of Graham's REX Libaries. (From Graham)
Chris noticed and pointed out a dependency in two of Graham's libraries. Graham has some updates to deal with the issue - see our Programming/SDK page for more info on Graham's updates that adjust and clarify the dependencies between the library add-ins.
The updated libraries are available at: http://www.cobb.uk.net/Rex
Developer News: Graham updates his cool REX libraries. (From Graham)
"I have released new versions of my Registry (V0.4), GRClib (V1.2) and MemoIO (V0.2) libraries. You can download them from:
These new versions do not contain any feature changes (or any major bug fixes) but they work with the "new" (actually, not so new any more) Rexdk library mechanism. This means that I have retired Dynlink as it is not needed any more and it also means that the libraries and the client code have all got smaller.
I have also fixed findlib so that it finds libraries loaded into Adder. The fixed findlib.asm is ... available as:
In order to use this, do the following steps:
1) Put the new findlib.asm in your rexdk\libsrc\rex\farcall directory (replacing the one already there)
2) cd to the rexdk\libsrc directory
3) execute: ..\bin\z80asm -l -v -d -ns -nm -Mo -DFORrex -xrex_clib.lib @rex6000.lst
4) copy rex_clib.lib ..\lib\clibs(Steps 3 and 4 can be replaced by executing the REXmake.bat file if you have installed the Rexdk in C:\REXDK)
As always, please let me know of any bugs, fixes or enhancements to these libraries, or just if you find them useful!
By the way, I plan to implement full binary mode support (memo_read and memo_write) and buffered I/O support (so memo_getc and memo_putc are rather more efficient) in MemoIO soon. If these would be useful to you, let me know as it may encourage me to add them sooner."
More REX community milestones - 200,000 hits and over 90 countries!
Recently we passed the 200,000 hit mark on this web site! Another reminder of what an amazing journey we've been on over the past year or so...
REX6000.org was established early in 2001. Initially it was a small collection of REX 6000 tips stored on very limited personal home page space. Shortly after that Henrik provided the REX6000 URL and enough server space to allow the site to grow to support the REX community's needs. Our very active world-wide community (that's you!!) have turned a "forgotten" PDA abandoned by Xircom and Intel and reported "dead" by the press into a successful product with support, extensions, enhancements, and add-in programs far beyond anything we (or they!) could have imagined.
Seems like a good time for another "Who are we?" doesn't it?! Pretty amazing - REX users come from over 90 countries around the world! Thanks to all of you who support the REX via postings on REX Rumor Central, submissions to this site, REX programming, web sync options, and by simply showing your co-workers our cool little "giant killer" micro-PDA.

REX to Israel via Australia! (From Pavel)
"Hi. I have just received my new REX 6000 with USB cradle. I live in Israel and it was very hard to find a vendor that would agree to ship here but finally I found the Austarlian site:
The total cost was 145USD (shipment included) but hey it's still worth it."
Thanks John, for the help! (From Joe)
"I couldn't find an e-mail address for John, so I hope you can relay the message for me. I wanted to thank him for his XP USB suggestion. Without it, I simply couldn't install REX on my new computer. Basically, my REX would have been rendered useless. Now, it seems to be working perfectly!
I just can't express how grateful I am for John and the rest of the REX community--especially rex6000.org. Thanks for maintaining such an incredible site. Sincerely, Joe"
We really can make a difference when we share our time and energy! Group hug!
New REX image tool from the author of REXRunt (From Benjamin)
"Once upon a time Dana wrote:
> Add me to the list of amazed Rexrunt users. <g>
> Can you puleeze do a bit more work so I can display my own bitmaps?Several others have made similar requests. My intention was to allow loading of images from files, but I've been a little busy, apparently for 6 months.. I have however created a picture to add-in converter which is probably satisfactory for most people. It's at:
DK's "customer testimonial:"
"Those who remember excellent 'RexRunt' demo addin from Benjamin know what great opportunities it offered to display greyscale pictures on your Rex.
This time Benjamin has released a Windows tool - 'PicToRex'- enabling us (non-developers) to easily hardcode our OWN photo into an addin and enjoy it in the Rex in four shades of grey.
It's very easy to use...with just a few mouse clicks it generates an addin with your photo. You may generate as many addins with different photos as you like and load them all at once into Rex. They all run perfectly. I also tried loading them into the Adder...works fine. Thanks, Benjamin."
Chis "Master of the REX" H. is working on some new goodies for the REX community! (From Chris)
"cMemo 1.0 will be 2 or possibly 3 addin spaces; currently I like to load it on my Rex in the 3 slots taken up by the silly built-in calculator. Yes, I'm going to release a "CalcBgone" which allows loading any addin (up to 3 x 8KB lots) to replace the Rex calculator. Next up, at popular request: "ClockBgone!"
The REX development community has given us so many gems it's hard to decide what to load or who to thank!
Chris continues to lead the way into the formerly unknown of the REX firmware - we all owe him a great debt of gratitude for all he's contributed to the REX community!
Additional REX German forum "discovered." (From Mantillo)
"Just wanted to let you know that I have found a German REX forum:
This site is relatively active, and has posts on both the 5000 and 6000 models. Paul Lenz (of REXKeys and REXWorld fame) has been seen posting there... For additional German (and other) REX forums/internet sites, see our Internet Resources page.
Mantillo's site up and running again. (From Mantillo)
"My website is no longer 'under construction'. Please feel free to use ...
...again to access the rex6000 stuff (sorry, no new rex6000 content).
I switched from fortunecity.de to tripod, this should work a little bit faster (and better?)."
PowerOff and WebBeGone working together. (From Ong)
"PowerOff add-in vs WebBgone add-in
If you install the WebBgone add-in & replace the web browser (in the Main) with the PowerOff add-in, then the next time you can use the stylus & click on the Web icon at the bottom (in the horizontal strip) & the PowerOff is activated directly (without having to go to the Extras).
The above method works if you don't use the Rex6000 web browser."
High praise for Roo's Minidata addin. (From AntMelNat, Yiming, and Troy)
"Roo,
Your MiniData version v0.9 is one of the best addins yet! I can't wait to see what you do next with it. Keep up the great work. Thanks to our developers, the R6K just keeps getting better and better. For those of you who have not tried the MiniData spread sheet yet, check it out at...
No bugs that I can find. AntMelNat"
"hi Roo, i have also tried your Minidata add-in, it's really great. and so far so good, no problem encountered. I encourage everyone to download it. Yiming"
"Hi Roo,
Minidata rocks ! Definately the best addin for me yet !! I'm sure others would agree that it wouldnt matter how many addin blocks it used if it had more functions. I'd quite happily have it as the only addin in my Rex if it came down to it. Thanks for an awesome job. Troy"Seems like this is one worth looking into....
Stylus option for REX leather case (From Shawn)
"For anyone who lost their sttylus for the leather case (like I did), Belkin offers some for the Visor Treo which work perfectly in the elastic band of the leather case. Part number F8R4300. They are so new they are not on the Belkin website, but can be bought at Microcenter, at least in Chicago."
Web site on hold, temporarily.
"An update. Mantillo's website at http://www.onkelfuzzy.de/ (for downloading "Power off" add-in) is under maintenance. Use the old website at http://members.fortunecity.de/mantillo/rex/index.html."
MiniData version v0.9 released (From Roo)
"Hi folks
I've just released MiniData v0.9 at www.fiendishcat.com. Feedback would be gratefully received..."
So what is it? To paraphrase Roo..."MiniData is a small database program which allows you to transfer comma delimited data back and forth between your Rex and PC. You can view and the data on the REX - and the data is stored so that it is relatively easy to transfer it back and forth to your PC using Rex Tools. It has NOT been thoroughly tested at present, and I would appreciate whatever feedback anyone wants to offer - on bugs in particular. The program uses two addin slots. There is an example data file and an html help file included in the Zip."
Roo's ultra-cool web site (just love the fiendish cat graphic) is worth visiting just for fun.

A REX history (From Majek)
"I don't know if you saw this before, but I found it today. :-) Nice REX history...
Although it doesn't cover all the important actors in our little homegrown REX community, it is a pretty decent summary of the past year or so.
Updates to REX site (From Han Jun)
"I've uploaded the Rex6000 User Guide (originally from Xircom Inc.) with some changes (notably about Rex.Net) and compiled it into a single Html Help file (those with *.chm)....By the way, all the links there are fixed, so you can download the Rex Virtual Emulator (from Rex.Net) to play with. Batterymaster still alive and kicking in Australia! (From Batterymaster)
We had received a report that Batterymaster wasn't responsive to phone calls. A response from Batterymaster:
"Hi. We are alive and kicking and extremely busy. Been established since 1987 and will maintain the CR2016 price at AUD$1.00 plus GST. This price is based on a tray of 20 pieces minimum.
Our Email address is:- [email protected]
Our website is:- www.batterymaster.com.au
We have replacement batteries for 1,000's of applications. Check it out."
Good to know our friends down under have so many options for batteries!
REX 5000/Win XP success (From William)
"Just to let you know that I am successfully running the REX Pro 5 (AKA REX 5000) on a Windows XP machine [PCMCIA sync]. I downloaded a Windows 2000 upgrade for TrueSycnPlus [from Intel's site] and installed it on my XP machine."
Radio Shack Battery offer (From Dennis)
"Batterys. Just went to Radio shack to buy new batterys for Rex after only 3 months this time. I was surprised to find out they have just started a new program that garantees replacement of your batterys for "3 YEARS" if you pay an extra .99cents each when you buy them . Hope this helps everybody !"
Lotus Notes Sync more difficult to achieve (From Chris Y.)
" ... everything listed for a Notes sync appears to be a dead end at this time:
- Tice's page is gone [Ed. note: Tice's site is down for now. A message on his page dated 3/20 says that he will "See you back soon." Let's hope so - it's a very useful REX site!
- Excite Canada is gone (as of 2/28/2002), Excite Planner is gone (as of 2/28/2002). (With @Home going out of business someone else bought Excite and turned off a bunch of the features. In a press release announcing the features were going away they said some "might" return later or in a different form.)
I don't have any solutions that work, but I thought I'd let you know the suggestions rex6000.org don't appear to be available any longer."
So those of you using Notes sync alternatives from our Sync Options page - how are things going? Are you still sync'ing through alternative methods? Let us know!
Digikey running low on stock (From Rob)
"Just went to order CR2016 batteries from digikey. The 90mAh (P138-ND) page shows 0 available, while the much more expensive 75mAh (P137-ND, $1.25) are still available."
See our REX/REX Stuff Vendors section (option in the menu pane at left) for more sources for REX batteries.
Also, if you are a brave REX user, you might consider CR-2020, or CR2025 batteries. More power, but in a thicker package that not everyone is brave enough to insert into their REX...some report success using these thicker batteries, but be careful if you decide to give them a try.
Digikey recommendation (From Chris)
"Just a note on buying batteries (since I noticed a news blurb about it).
As noted in the Vendors section, Digi-Key (http://www.digikey.com/) sells Panasonic CR2016 batteries for cheap if you buy at least $25 worth. At $25 you get free shipping, and the batteries wind up costing less than 50 cents each.
This is for people in the US, and you can just go to their web site and search for "P138-ND". Add 62 batteries to reach $25 and free shipping.
I did this and the batteries came quickly, and packaged in such a way that I can store them easily. At first I thought the Digi-Key web site looked a little amateurish, but everything came out okay."
See our Battery Vendor page for more information on Digikey and other battery vendors recommended by REX users.
Updated Unit Converter add-in (From John)
"RE: UNIT CONVERTER
Minor upgrade:
- Called version 4.0 Now
- Has an icon thankx to Jack Trades (I am not entertaining requests for different icons anymore, I like this one.)
- An alternative method of initializing for ADVANCED USERS. (This has no effect on regular users, everything has remained unchanged for you guys and this version will be fine for you). The new initialization lets you specify a filename other than z_jdf_UNITS as the startup file. It is a kludge, but it took very little code space and some might be interested in this feature.
Fix for XP USB install problems!(?) (From John)
"Hi! Short story: I bought the Rex6000/USB for my wife, about a year ago; but ever since I upgraded her machine from WindowsME to WindowsXP she was quite unhappy over the fact that she could not sync her Rex anymore. So finally I spent some (a lot) time testing:
I am not quite 100% convinced, but over here, on 3 differente machines (two running XPPro/English, and 1 running XPHome/English), I think I found the solution (or better make that "a" solution) to the installation problem:
Every time things appeared to go fine, but at the end of the install things would bomb out; this appeared to be because of the installation of the USB <-> Serial port installer; this was overwriting kernel memory. (probably some poorly implemented hook or so).
Just trying to not have the kernel disallow that, appeared to work! Agreed, 3 different machines is not much of a real-world testbed, but at least for me it worked. So, open up the registry editor [Start/Run/regedit], and go to:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
Now add a REG_DWORD value name "EnforceWriteProtection" (sans quotes, ofcourse), and set that to 0 (which is the default for a newly created value anyway); it this value is already present, just change the (most likely value of) 1 to 0 ... reboot, and you should be able to install fine (with or without Windows2000 compatibility mode)..
I hope his works for others as well...."Thanks from Mac-land... (From Michael)
"In response to "MAC OSX vs. REX 6000 update - no joy! (From Dan)"... I want to thank Dan from the bottom of my heart, you gave me the clarification on using the REX 6000 in the PCM slot on my Wallstreet/OS 9.2.2 with Virtual PC. It is now at least 4 times faster than using the USB cradle, and no hang ups with Windows 98 recognizing the cradle... great!"
For more on Mac and other operating systems and the REX 6000, see our Operating System page.
Battery options abounding:
From Michael:
"Here's a link for your battery page - CR2016 batteries in the UK at just 28p each.
From Travis:
"I just got back from the Philippines. I got a really good price on the Toshiba CR2016 3v lithium batteries. I purchased all the batteries that the store had. So, I have 30 batteries to sell for $1.50 + actual shipping a piece (wal-mart sells them for $3.00 a piece)."
You can email Travis at [email protected].
REX going for $69 on ebay. (From Brad)
"I have just ordered a new rex 6k off of e-bay and I cant wait to get it. By the way there's someone selling them brand new on ebay for $69.00 plus shipping. Just type in (pda rex) in the search box and scroll down to one that says buy now, he seems to have plenty. I don't know for how long but they've been on there for about 2 weeks."
MAC OSX vs. REX 6000 update - no joy! (From Dan)
"Macintosh OS X information: I have moved to Mac OS X on my PowerBook G4 and cannot get the Rex 6000 to work with it using Virutal PC 4 or 5.
Under OS 9, inserting the Rex causes its icon to appear on the desktop as "Rex 6000 ". I can then map a com port on Virtual PC to it as a "Non Modem Device" and it works.
But, inserting the Rex when running OS X causes no icon to appear. Its as if OS X does not recognize a PCMCIA card being inserted at all. After some searching, I found some information that says that PCMCIA cards are only supported under OSX through standard services, such as the file system for a memory card, or Apple Modem services for a Modem card, etc. Otherwise PCMCIA cards are not currently supported.
This may change in future releases of OSX, but for now, I need to reboot under OS 9 to access the Rex. Just thought you Mac users would want to know."
CalPlanner update released! (From Myles)
New version of calplanner is now on rexextras. The problem of now events appearing for some users has been fixed, and with some events missing. The icon has been changed to fit in with those on the main screen for those who use this with webBgone.
Thankyou to all those who provided feedback to the beta version. Please feedback any further problems."
This is one of the "must have" REX enhancements!
REX 6000s available at eCost. (From Mondo)
"Just wanted to send a note that eCost has a limited supply of REX 6000 PDAs (w/serial docking stations) for $89.95. http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=873423"
Rexworld released for REX World Clock city updates. (From Paul)
"RexWorld is a program which creates files with new locations for the Rex6000 world clock. Don't be annoyed by your editor, the necessary file format and using tabs - just click on the world map and edit some entries. Download RexWorld from my web page and have fun."
New content available via rex.mamy.to web download page (From GPF)
"I had some nice progress on the Rex Content Provider project. Now the generic module and weather module are almost finished. To have a preview of sample output, go to rex.mamy.to and sync "Graphical Weather Report Sample" under "Test" category to your REX. :)
I need some icons for the weather report. Can someone help me to create several 16*16 b/w bitmaps to represent "Snow", "Cloud","Rain","Sun","Wind" etc? I tried to make Sun icon myself, but it turned out very ugly. Thanks! Hope my site goes live soon!"
New REX web site and add-ins. (From David)
David has created a new REX web site, and is developing his own add-ins as well as listing available add-ins for download. An interesting feature allows you to vote on the add-ins you like best, and you can sort your view of the add-in list dynamically. (For screen shots of REX add-ins before you download, visit Myles' add-in download pages.)
David's add-ins include Image View and a new version of Snake.
REX barcode results (From Otavio)
"Hi Brian! The barcode idea is great, but I'm affraid gsearle is right, I do succeed inputing barcodes into Rex6k as you can see here: http://sites.uol.com.br/otavioguzzi/Barcode.htm but the Blockbuster guy tried at least 5 times with no success, but he accepted it and the Makro (kind of a local Costco) too. So I have two cards less in my wallet!"
A truly secure customized version of the REX leather case (From Ryan)
"...this e-mail is in regards to a pretty good Idea I thought of as a protective case for my Rex.
Two months ago I cracked the screen on my Rex 6000 (I sat on it by accident). Well, when I got my replacement Rex I wanted to make sure it wouldn't happen again. So I decided to do a little experiment with the Rex Leather Wallet.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for the damage you may have caused by trying to make and/or use this case setup. Ok, now thats that out of the way. [We're all lawyers these days...<g>]
I went to the hardware store and bought two Zinc Metal alloy plates and some electrical tape(these plates can found by the door hinges and electrical section in a hardware store). The plates have no flex at all, and measure roughly 9cmx3.5cmx.3cm (LxWxH), perfect for being placed as backings for the REX leather wallet. I used the electrical tape to mask the bare metal. Then I just put some duct tape on the back side of each plate, and placed one where a business card would go, and one behind where the rex would go. Last, I would recommend getting a black plastic twist tie, or anything else to move the elastic band up a little. This is because it covers part of the screen, and it could crack your screen where the band covers it. In fact I know that the band cracks the screen because I used this setup for about a week without moving the elastic band up, and ended up with a very small black ball point size crack there.(See one of my pictures for this). After I moved the elastic band, I could sit on my rex while it is this case, even on hard surfaces! Place the twist tie on the side clostest to the slip-in end of the Rex walet. Then make sure to push up the elastic band and tuck the twist tie behind the metal plate that is behind the rex to keep the elastic band from moving back down.
To finish up the look, I placed some yellow sticky notes where the business cards would go, although you could easily place a credit card or other card there too. Now I don't know how succesfull other people may be at doing this same thing, but it's been working for me for a month or so now (yes, sitting in my back pocket), so I figured I'd share this idea with anybody who feels like being a little risky. Thanks for your time, and keep on rexin'!"
Not a spreadsheet update released - user configurable! (From John)
"NOT A SPREADSHEET (!SS) is done. It is fully configurable by a user memo. A sample memo is included.
Remember this requires the main addin, the library addin, and the memo.
Since I recieved ZERO comments on this project, I figured that was satisfactory encouragement to continue it!!
Now...WHO WILL BE THE FIRST to make a USER FILE that is a FINANCIAL CALCULATOR; or any other special purpose calculator you want. Make the Files and share them with us!!
Rextras.net updated and up-to-date. (From John)

Interesting idea to lighten your wallet. (From Veets)
"Has anyone used their Rex 6000 to store scannable bar-codes? I was considering setting up something like this to get rid of various cards in my wallet with bar codes (e.g., Blockbuster Video, grocery store rewards program, etc.). A couple of questions come to mind:
- Would a barcode displayed on the Rex be scannable by a typical retail scanner?
- How many images could be practically stored?
It seems like there are a ton of freeware bar code generators out there, so it would simply be a matter of generating a bar code in the same format as that used on an existing card, and then to save the image in the Rex.
Any thoughts?"

Bertus and possible add-in updates. (From Bertus)
"Long ago I compiled an 8 list version of both Rexpense and Tasklean, on request of several people who emailed me. (yes, there are advantages to providing FeEDbACk :-)
They're not on the website now, but like I wrote before, given some time I will put up different versions with different nr of lists, where the version with the most lists is for the boldest users, since it may corrupt other stuff (theory).
I might also make a version with an 'add list' facility, and a dynamic one-for-all tasklean version that detects the current number of rexpenselists in memory automatically.
If anyone else want to take this up, they're welcome to do so. I'll need at least a week myself due to time constraints. The Rexpense code has a MAX_LISTS #define which takes care of pretty much everything related to the amount of lists. Be careful that the database id's of Rexpense start at 10100, and increase by 100 for each list. So at 100 lists I think it will hit the ID (20000) of the webdatabase and possibly corrupt it. It is very well possible that 100 lists is way too much due to other reasons (like a maximum nr of databases allowed in Rex memory).
A more elegant option to support more lists would be to add a field to the Rexpense table for the listnumber, and keep all records in 1 table, instead of each list in a separate table.
If anyone is going to attempt to make changes, please let me know so that we don't duplicate effort."
Canadian battery group purchase coming up. (From Mike)
"I will be doing another bulk order of batteries for Canadian users. The costs works out to less than $1 CDN per battery, after shipping and customs. Anyone interested can contact me directly. I plan on ordering on April 15. Mike"
