REX 6000 Add-ins - What are they? <back to top>

The "Add-ins" feature on the REX 6000 allows you to add new capabilities to your REX. Add-ins are small programs that can be downloaded (via REX Tools) and then run on your REX 6000. You can load up to eight Add-in programs at one time on your REX 6000, up to 18 if you are using the add-in "Adder," (see below on this page).

Add-ins are run from the "Extras" menu on the REX (see below). On the Main Menu tap on "Extras" to go to the Extras screen.

<<------ There!

Most of the original Add-ins available for the REX 6000 were actually written for the Japanese DataSlim2 (also known as the DS2), the Citizen product that the REX 6000 is based on. Some of these DS2 add-ins were translated into English (see below) by very generous DS2 Add-in developers in Japan. There were also many others that weren't translated, and surprisingly, even when still in Japanese some DS2 add-ins are surprisingly usable and useful. Thanks to the efforts of the REX developer community there are now many REX 6000 add-ins, and more are being released regularly.

(FYI: Xircom released just two add-ins w/the REX. However, as the two add-ins - wmladdin.rex and wmlv100.rex, located in the REX Tools directory - are both web content viewers similar to the built-in web content viewer in the REX 6000. What's strange is why Xircom includes them, and what they were originally written for.)

See our Programming/SDK page for info on REX add-in development tools that now allow programmers to easily create add-ins for the REX 6000. Also, see our Internet Resources page for information on joining the REX developers mailing list.

Every effort is made to ensure that every available REX and DS2 add-in can be found via the links on this page. If you know of any that aren't noted here, please let us know! We do not store actual add-ins on this site (except in rare occassions when asked by the developer). You can be sure of getting the most up-to-date add-in and developer announcements by following the links to the developer's sites!

Thanks (domo-arigato?) to REX user Zmcnulty for originally posting about the Japanese add-ins and for acting as liaison to the Japanese DS2 add-in developer community for REX 6000 owners!

And a huge thank-you to the dedicated volunteers who have spent hundreds of hours researching the REX hardware and firmware, developing and adapting tools to create add-ins and programs to make the REX a more useful and fun product!! The level of unselfish sharing and collaboration is impressive to see, and has resulted in an amazingly fast ramp-up of add-in development and understanding of the REX firmware.

REX 6000 Add-ins <back to top>

Below is a listing of many of the available REX 6000 add-ins. See Myle's Download page for a more complete list!

Adder - a major breakthrough! Chris breaks the 8 add-in barrier on the REX!!

The biggest news since "Lucky Lindbergh" landed in Paris! Chris has released Adder 1.0, with support for loading more add-ins and other great new features! The REX normally only holds 8 add-ins, not nearly enough. So Chris fixed that for us!

"Hi All, I've posted a new version of Adder, which now handles loading up to 17 addins into empty holes in the Rex firmware, providing a total of 24 addins (not 25, since Adder itself must be loaded to access the other 24)."

This is a really amazing little program! With over 34 REX add-ins to choose from (and more coming every day) Chris' Adder is highly recommended to get the most out of your REX.

Chris also provides Tassa - an Italian tax calculation app, with source code is also on Chris' site, along with Dockpatch, a utility that allows you to use your REX in the serial cradle, as well as several prorammer tools.

CalPatch - enhances REX usability! (From Chris)

Chris continues to come up with intriguing tools and updates for the REX! Now the creator of Adder and cMemo (among others) offers up an update to the REX firmware to make navigation simpler and easier! No more waiting for screens to refresh as you page through calendar pages for a specific date! Here's the scoop:

"Hi everybody. I've posted "CalPatch", a patch to the Rex 6000 firmware to provide a "Go To" function in the Rex Calendar dialog. Download it, load it as an addin on your Rex, and run it once to install the patch.

It puts a "GoTo" button in the bottom line of the Calendar dialog ("Day" mode ONLY). I've tested it pretty thoroughly - let me know if it causes any problems on your Rex. Worst case, just reload firmware to undo the patch."

Greg raised an interesting question about running CalPatch and Adder together. Which brought up other questions about running CalPatch on a REX that has firmware modified using Paul Lenz' RexKeys. Testing shows that CalPatch works fine with firmware modified with RexKeys, as well as with the other add-ins that patch the REX firmware to operate (including Adder and cMemo):

"I use a firmware i made with "RexKeys" and i also installed "CalPatch" ,"Adder", "cMemo" , and use "Find" a lot and never had a problem . Before running CalPatch i also was worried if addins loaded to adder would be affected but like you said [Chris] is VERY good at his work ..."

Do not load CalPatch into Adder! (From Chris)

CalPatch will run find on a REX that has Adder loaded on it. However, you should not load CalPatch into Adder:

"DO NOT LOAD CalPatch into Adder! (It will not patch the firmware properly, and the user that tried this found that it broke his Rex firmware. I'm pretty sure a firmware update will fix it - haven't heard back from him yet.)

CalPatch is to be run just one time, then DELETED, so there is no point in storing it anywhere on your Rex."

cMemo (Also From Chris)

A very cool memo browser/reader that is a great tool for eText readers or anyone who wants a simple way to browse/read memos on the REX and have the ability to scroll one page at a time (a feature sadly lacking from the REX firmware).

July, 2002: "Hi all, I have posted cMemo version 1.0 on my website. It now takes 2 addin slots, plus a 3rd slot containing Graham Cobb's Registry library. Any or all of the 3 may be loaded into Adder; the main addin (cMemo.rex) may also be loaded to the Rex main menu using WebBgone.

Please see the ReadMe.txt for detailed installation instructions: you must execute a cMemo installation addin before using cMemo 1.0.

Please let me know right away if you have problems with this new release, at [email protected]."

Find (From Gerd)

MUST HAVE!!! An addin that you won't be able to live without once you have it. Search contacts (including notes in Contacts), memos, calendar entries, and tasks for text strings.

Week (From Laurent)

"I have seen from the REX discussion forum that few persons wanted to have an Addin that gives the Week number (actually it's pretty usefull if you have/want to make weekly status report at work). So here is the addin (the very first one I made in a couple of hours)."

If you'd like to download the add-in and source code, Laurent has generously provided that as well.

CalPlanner (From Myles)

This is a "must-have" add-in, providing functionality that should have been on the REX in the first place. Simple, and simply wonderful.

"New addin: CalPlanner. This will read the calendar database and show the 30 next upcoming events in your diary. It has some limitations but I thought I’d release a demo and ask for feedback. The current limitations are:

  • Repeat events – only annual is catered for. I.e., Daily and weekly don’t work yet
  • Speed – it takes a few seconds to read and sort the diary events (I believe I can speed this up – the events in the diary are typically in an approximate date order and if I reverse the sort logic it should benefit from this)"

Update April 11, 2002:

"CalPlanner: New release:

New version of calplanner is now on rexextras. The problem of now events appearing for some users has been fixed, and with some events missing. The icon has been changed to fit in with those on the main screen for those who use this with webBgone. Thankyou to all those who provided feedback to the beta version. Please feedback any further problems."

This is one of the "must have" REX enhancements!

Dictionary (From John)

From Myster

"John Del Ferro just released a new beta version 0.7b of RexDictionary addin. Since he will be away for some days he asked me to post on RRC a readme file for those having trouble with it"

From John:

"The Dictionary BETA is Done. It seems fairly stable. MAX SEARCH TIME for a word is about 10 seconds.

GERD is working on some additional language dictionaries.

QC Tang is working on an ENGLISH-ENGLISH Dictionary based on words needed for SAT. (I have the first 5000 words already and will release on weekend)

PLEASE TRY. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH MEMO SYNCING. IF YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT AT WORKING WITH MEMOS AND SYNCING, THEN WAIT FOR THE README!!

SORRY it is so rushed, but I don't have a lot of time!!"

From Gerd:

"I have created several new language pairs. But they are not 100% compatible with John's. My files would need some hand editing to be understood by the addin. I will work on that over the weekend.

You can have a look at

http://xtide.ldeo.columbia.edu/~krahmann/rex/rexdics.html

for what I have so far (english-other, other-english) and for what is easily possible. Please read the comments on the page before you ask me to create other pairs. For missing pairs from the main table please send me an e-mail."

Rexworld released for REX World Clock city updates. (From Paul)

"RexWorld is a program which creates files with new locations for the Rex6000 world clock. Don't be annoyed by your editor, the necessary file format and using tabs - just click on the world map and edit some entries. Download RexWorld from my web page and have fun."

Birthday (Originally from Arjan)

The Birthday add-in was first conceived and developed by Arjan. The add-in quickly became popular with users and developers. Arjan generously released his source code and suggested that others might enhance and and extend his work. Developers have done just that! There are now three versions of the add-in available, each with different features and functionality!

Arjan's original Birthday add-in - "I updated my birthday addin using the sort algoritm of van Menashe Dickman and implemented a scrollbar (it only works when dragging the thumb). I also took the liberty to implement this scroll bar in the addin of Menashe Dickman. Both addins [Arjan's and Menashe's] can be downloaded from http://briefcase.yahoo.com/arjanmeskers." [Note: Menashe later enhanced his version of the add-in and renamed it "Congrats" - see two paragraphs below.]

Nic's Birthday add-in - "Nicolas Young has just released his new version of the birthdays tracker add-in based on Arjan Meskers' original idea. The add-in has been enhanced with new cool graphics & layout, scrolling by page & single line, sorting by date & name (up & down). It has a wonderful MS Windows like drop-out menu. The minor bugs detected in his earlier versions have been kindly fixed by Nic in this new release. I tested this version and it works flawlessly. I am more than grateful. Keep up the great work, Nic!!! Everybody, enjoy this add-in and report the suggestions you have to [email protected]!!!"

Now available in Spanish, German, and Dutch versions! (From Hernan)

"At http://www.orgmf.com.ar/condor/rex6000.html you can find the Birthday addins for Outlook in Spanish, German, and Dutch. They are derived from Nic Young's one. All I changed was a couple of LOCs. Anyone like to help me test with French, Italian or whatever other language version of Outlook? (mail me).

Menashe's Congrats add-in - "Hi. I have an addin that extends Arjan's birthday add-in to handle anniversaries as well. It handles scrolling well - single position for arrows up and down, page up and down when using the scroll buttons. Thanks Nic, for the scrolling pointers. I discovered that in order to scroll properly, you need to set the number of lines to be the (number of records - records per page). It asks whether you want to view birthdays or anniversaries on startup. Birthdays must be entered as "Someone's Birthday" and anniversaries as "Someone's Anniversary" (without the quotes). Dates are displayed as DD-MMM-YYYY to minimize confusion. You can sort by Name, Age or Date by clicking on the column headers. A second click on the same field sorts in reverse. Click the 'X' in the upper right-hand corner to exit. I've renamed the add-in Congrats! and created a new icon of streamers and confetti."

Lines (From Sergey)

"New addin released! By Sergey Khachatryan

Arkanoid (From Simon)

Arkanoid Update released - 6 new levels. (From Simon)

"I've tried the "back button exits" on the Arkanoid game, but unfortunately it doesn't work (you probably have to wait for events). Therefore, returning to the game is unlikely to be implemented (there's only about 10 bytes more possible to add to the REX binary). Sorry.

Anyhow, I have released a small update to the game (miniscule is more like it). In version 0.4, level skipping (editing the arkanoid memo) is done 5 levels at a time. That means that level 01 now means the 5th level, 02 the 10th etc.

I've also added 6 more levels to have a total of 20. You can download the addin at:

http://www.student.lu.se/~etn97ksi/sim_home/rex.html

Remember to upload arkanoid.txt as well if you want the additional levels."

Backgammon (From Gerd)

"Bugfix release 0.4 of the backgammon addin"

Battle! (From Paul)

From the readme.txt file:

"The object of the game is to defeat a dragon. To do this, earn points by attacking and defeating lesser monsters...

Now how can you resist that?! Find Battle here, but look for courage within your own heart.

Boggle! (Also from Paul)

"For anyone else who's interested, the add-in is a "Boggle" type game in which you try to spell words from a grid within the two-minute limit."

Paul's first add-in, Battle, found some a very dedicated audience. His next should do the same.

Chess - two versions!

From Myles.

Myles has two chess add-ins, one that allows you to play another person, and another that provides a computer player!!

Myles' Chess addins

"You can play against the rex. Compared to the 2 player version I had to drop choice of pawn upgrade (defaults to Queen) and en passent (which seemed fairly obscure) in order to get it to fit in 8k. The King and Queen now start on the corrected squares and there is a warning displayed when check situation exists (it doesn't spot check-mate). It plays enough to make you have to think but it's relatively easy to beat. I think to make it significantly smarter would require writing it in assembler to get more code into the available space. I'd welcome any feedback."

From Chris:

"Hi all, I've posted a simple chess board addin. No computer player (yet) or even checking for valid moves or checkmate, but does save your game for you - thanks to Graham for excellent (and fast!) "Registry" routines.

To install it:
- download Chess.zip to your PC & unzip it.
- use RexTools to load Chess.rex & ChessFnt.rex on your Rex
- Run ChessFont on your Rex, just once. Be sure your batteries show "GOOD" status before doing this, and do not try to put ChessFnt in Adder. After it runs successfully, you may delete it.
- Chess addin will now be operational; load to Adder if desired.

Questions, comments: [email protected]"

Minesweeper (From Daniel)

Daniel (of Rexdk fame) has been hard at work on a new toy for all of us:

"Hi all, I have converted and translated the Mines addin to work with the rex. The addin was originally written for the DS2 by Citizien and is a Minesweeper-like game. Have fun."

Power-off (From Mantillo)

"hello! The first release of a shut-off-your-rex-just-with-stylus-add-in is out! It is named PowerOff v0.9 and you can download it here:

http://www.onkelfuzzy.de/

There are three problems with my PowerOff addin -

  1. You only have five seconds to enter your password after restarting the Rex (if you use a password).
  2. The auto shut off time will be set to 60 seconds if you have used PowerOff.
  3. If your Rex has been shut off with PowerOff and there are alarms set, the Rex will beep endlessly, you will have to stop it manually!

I can not solve these problems, maybe someone else could do, but I think the best solution would be a power off addin written in ASSEMBLER instead of C. Maybe someone like Chris Harris could find out what exactly happens (which commands are performed) when you are pressing the HOME key for three seconds to shut off the Rex, and write the SAME code in a little addin to shut off the Rex in exactly the same Way it's HOME key does. This should not be that difficult for some of our Rex community members, I am sure someone would like to do the job if enough people are interested in a shut-off-by-stylus feature! Feel free to use my C based PowerOff addin instead, but be aware of those problems listed above!!!"

For those seeking the nirvana of stylus-only power-off using Mantillo's add-in, remember the little trick using the web icon to return to the main menu using your stylus. From pretty much any screen in the REX you can tap the silk-screened Web icon to go to your web content screen, and then tap the header on the web screen to go to the main menu (or whatever "main" screen (today's date, Main, or Extras) you were last on. From there it is simple to get to the power off add-in. From most screens it will take four taps (Web icon, Web page header, Extras tab, power-off add-in) to use the new add-in to poweroff...but that's still more fun that pressing the home key. :-)

Unit Converter, Not a Spreadsheet, and Memocat (From John)

John has been busy - unit converter is probably his most popular add-in. It stores the units to be converted in a memo on the REX that you can edit/update with your own conversions - money, temperature, lengths, etc. He provides a text file with many conversion factors already set up that you can use! See his site for more info on all three add-ins.

"RE: Unit Converter UCREX VERSION 3.9d

IT APPEARS that I have solved the problems of UCRex not working for some people. I have sent it out to several testers who previously were unable to use UCREX because it would freeze their rex or cause re-boot of rex.

I have 4 responses now and all are totally pleased that the program now works on their REX and the text files are read, the conversions work, and the program exits. All of this without crashing your rex!!!

I have placed it on the web site as "UCREX54.ZIP".

If you have had problems in the past, download and give it a try!!

There are no new features. It is same as the previous text file versions.

(Note: This is still a 3.xxx version. A 4.0 is coming that will make it easier to switch between unit text files. Look for it 2 weeks from now!)"

Not-a-Spreadsheet can be CUSTOMIZED by John:

"Released a CUSTOMIZED version requested by a user. He sent me some equations related to his businiss and invoicing and estimating quantities. I compiled the addin with his equations. If you want a customized version let me know!"

Not-a-Spreadsheet now user configurable!

"NOT A SPREADSHEET (!SS) is done. It is fully configurable by a user memo. A sample memo is included. Remember this requires the main addin, the library addin, and the memo. Since I recieved ZERO comments on this project, I figured that was satisfactory encouragement to continue it!! Now...WHO WILL BE THE FIRST to make a USER FILE that is a FINANCIAL CALCULATOR; or any other special purpose calculator you want. Make the Files and share them with us!!

http://www.geocities.com/jdelferro/rex"

"Final Release of MemoCat Addin.

It is Done!! A maybe useful addin for browsing all your memos based on categories. It is similar to Cmemo by Chris Harris, but MemoCat does NOT have bookmark or search features. (in fact it uses some of Chris Harris's code that is badly mangled by me!)

Hopefully MemoCat gets wiped out by Chris Harris's future upgrade to CMemo, but in the meantime this is a quick way to show off all the memos on you Rex.

Features:

  • Note that when you go to "Full Screen" Mode the underlying buttons still work even though you can't see them!!
  • Tapping the areas where the invisible "Show Memo" is will return you to the "Standard Screen" mode.
  • Tapping the Left/Right arrows will perform the following:
  • Top arrows: pgup/pgdn 100 lines
  • Second row arrows: pgup/pgdn 30 lines
  • Bottom row Arrows: pgup/pgdn 10 lines

Also the HARDWARE BUTTONS:

  • UP ARROW: go to First Line
  • Down Arrow: go to END OF FILE"

RPN calculator (From Georgy)

"This is a simple RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) calculator. (RPN means it's stack-based and you first enter numbers on the stack and then operate on them. So, in order to divide 20 by 5 you first enter 20, then enter 5, then order: divide!) It has a stack of three numbers, 2 memory cells, 40 storage cells, 40 unit conversions, all usual math operations, 11 or 12 decimal digits precision (exponent -38 to +38), input and display in hexadecimal notation. Error detection/report is rather primitive because of the memory limitations. The calculator uses math functions from a separate math library addin.

Any suggestions/corrections are welcome!" Please email Georgy with any comments!

Great work, Georgy! This has been an oft requested add-in, and will make many REX users very happy. Enjoy Georgy's RPN calculator.

Euro-Calc (From Guillame)

". . . a first version of a new "home made" Addin (thanks to the REXDK team), in both in French & English.

EUROCALC is a mini calcultor with EURO currencies automatic convertor, with a double display screen. IT is very usefull for me, and I hope it will for other european people."

3D Cobra (From Bertus!)

"Hi Dana,

It's been some time since I last mailed you! I got nostalgic and made a generally useless but nice addin. Cobra 3D is an interactive 3D showoff kinda addin. You can rotate a 3D spaceship (not just any spaceship: it's the Cobra Mk iii!) on the screen of your Rex. Although this will not contribute anything to world peace or any other greater goal, it might be nice to watch or show to someone. I'm not planning on converting the complete Elite game (see 'Background' in the readme), I just wanted to see if I could make a 3D addin."

RexReader (From Peter)

Updated to version 1.4 on 2/12/02

An updated version of RexReader has been released. This is an interesting add-in that allows you to display formatted text in memos on your REX!

"RexReader V1.4 is out with the following changes:

  • There is no size limit on memos anymore
  • Limit of 50 pages per memo
  • Page brakes are handled and dedected better
  • The page number is shown in the status field and if shown and a beep sounds the rendering of the page has completed
  • Rendering of bold and small text corrected (where to narrow)
  • Formatting option _p leads to new page
  • The enter key refreshs the current page (if an alarm or a battery dialog obscured the screen)
  • Code cleanups"

Some good ideas for using RexReader. (From Jack)

"Re: RexReader text converter...Actually, you should be able to use a program like Word (or better yet, WordPerfect) to create a WYSIWYG document, using bold, italic, etc. then use the search and replace function to replace these tags with the RexReader tags. You might also consider an HTML editor. From what I've read, the RexReader uses encapsulated tags for the text, meaning there's an ON switch and an OFF switch for each formatting type (bold, etc.). This is similar to HTML and WordStar type formatting. WordPerfect's Reveal Codes should show something similar. Also, check out a freeware program called NoteTab Light. You can write your own keyboard shortcuts to automatically enter RexReader style formatting in a text document. NoteTab Light is available at: www.notetab.com."

Blackjack (From Myles)

"If you want to gamble, baby I'm your man" Motorhead - The Ace of Spades. I started this intending it to have a card counting indicator so I can practise :) It could do with spliting of hands and doesn't bet - just counts winning hands. The card graphics are fairly smart though I thought."

BlackJack (From [email protected])

"Hi everybody! I finished my first addin. It is (unfortunately) Black Jack. I know there is already one out there, but diversity is always good ;-) Please feel free to send any comments to [email protected] Long live the batteries..."

Dice, Blackjack, and Video Poker (From Mantillo)

Mantillo was one of the early contributors to REX users, with a utility to help get contacts from TrueSync Desktop to Intellisync Mobile Desktop. He also has three add-ins for your enjoyment! See the REX page on Mantillo's site. He also provides the sourcecode for his add-ins!

Bulls & Creots (From Michael)

"It's a number guessing game called Bulls and Creots. There's a help file in the zip. Any comments are welcome from anyone who downloads it (or doesn't, for that matter). I suppose anyone can email me if they would like the source."

Rextrain (From Davrex)

A very interesting "user recompilable" add-in released. (From Davrex)

Davrex has put together both an add-in and a way for others to update/localize it to their purposes. His web site is quite detailed and well done - worth looking at even if you're not sure you need the add-in!

"Hi all! I've created my first addin for Rex6000: "RexTrain". I was doubting if making it public or not, becasue I don't know if it will be very useful to a lot of people. In any case, I have set up a page for you to decide.

RexTrain is a visual timetable for trains (or another transport with regular and frequent departs & arrivals). It plots a visual representation of the trains depart & arrival times at some station at the time you plan to arrive
at it.

Basically it answers to the question: I'm at x minutes from station 'A' and I plan to go to station 'B'. Which trains will I found when I arrive at station 'A'? In fact, the original question that led me to make this little addin was: "Must I run now or I have plenty of time to catch the next one ?" :->

All the data is hardcoded in the addin (no external memos). If you want to create another localization you must recompile it. But I have set up an easy mechanism to automate it (you don't need to know C at all!!). Please refer to my page for more detailed information. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks to all the developers that have shared their source code and REX experiences with all of us !! Without their support I never would have been able to create any addin.

And, if you happen to live near Davrex and take the same trains, you could even use it as is! :-)

Scientific calculator (From V. Mittal)

"I own a Rex6K and I really appreciate the good work being done by all the Rex6K addin developers. I have also developed a scientific calculator for Rex6K."

Encrypted Memo (From Gerd)

"New version 0.5b of the encrypted memo addin.

- up/down now moves the display by 7 lines (i.e. a whole display)
- the 4 'memos' have now changable names (up to 4 characters)
- tiny speedup

From Gerd's web site:

"WARNING ! I had at some time difficulties with the following addin. I found cases when it was impossible to connect to the computer because of some apparently corrupted structures in the rex. I was ALWAYS able to recover by deleting the four picture files with the tinydraw addin. So please ALWAYS load the tinydraw addin together with the encrypted memo addin. And please note that you always use the addin at your own risk ! Here is version 0.2 of the encrypted memo addin. Be aware that I consider this code beta software. I can't guarantee that it does not damage existing data on your rex ! Try it at your own risk. Testing of this version on my Rex has not shown the aforementioned problems."

Schnauz and Fox and Hound (From Alex)

Alex has added two addins:

"Schnauz is a simple draw and discard game, suitable for players of all ages. Players have a three card hand and the aim is to collect cards in a single suit worth 31 points or as near as possible to that total. It is played in variations in the USA, the UK and perhaps other places. In the USA it is usually called Scat or 31, in the UK also Scat or Ride the Bus."

There's even a way to cheat a bit if you find the REX too challenging an opponent. :-)

"Fox and Hunter is a game played on a chess/checkers board (chess?!? --- No way!). The game is played on the black fields only, like checkers. One white stone is the fox and four black stones are the hunters. The fox tries to reach the other side of the board, while the four hunters try to prevent this. Only one hunter can move one field forward at a time. The fox can move one field forward or backward. If the fox slips through a hole in the line of the hunters or reaches the other side, it has won. If the hunters manage to surround the fox so it can´t move anymore they have won the game."

Piano (From Ugg!)

"I am releasing version 0.9 of my REX Piano addin. This version has all of the keys "tuned" to their proper pitches (or as close as the REX will allow). See the link on my web page for more info about the REX sound hardware and it's limitations. (Link provided by Benjamin Green.) With the release of 0.9, I'm also releasing the source code. It's a bit messy, but it's all there. All I ask is that you send me (or make public) any changes you make! Thanks!

I am still developing version 1.0 of the Piano addin, which will include: playing saved melodies from memos (very close to finishing this) and "sliding" notes (touch a note then slide to the next). If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for this addin, drop me an e-mail."

Sunmoon (From DaveREX)

"SunMoon tries to pack the most relevant Sun & Moon events for the current time and date (in the user's eographical location). It marks the rise and set times for sun (mathematical, civil, nautical, astronomical amateur, astronomical professional) and moon (just the mathematical ones). It plots the position of sun and moon in their daily cycles. And for the sun it is compared with its maximum and minimum variations (summer and winter solstices).

Finally, both are also situated in their global cycles. For the sun it marks us the current zodiacal constellation (and in consequence the season). For the moon its current phase, both graphically and numerically. This time the addin doesn't need to be recompiled for each user !! ;-> ...it reads the data from a memo.

(Feb 25, 2002) "I've released a new version (0.9) of SUNMOON.

The generator should now work with all international versions of windows.

And there is also a localized version (season's names) of the addin for southern hemisphere users. (At least I know now that there is one !! ;->)"

PacMan (From Roo)

"Dana, PacMan is now available at www.fiendishcat.com/rex. It's a fairly early (and slow!) version, but playable. Cheers,"

Tetris (From Roo)

"Hi! Just thought I'd let people know that I was a bit bored so knocked up a crude Tetris game. There are a few extra bits I need to sort out, but it's fairly playable just now. The possibility of using two add-in slots for bigger programs sounds promising..."

Roo's Tetris is fun - very playable and polished! It should help you kill a quite few hours (and maybe a few batteries).

Tetrex (From Vasily)

Myles has the second Tetris add-in on his add-in quick download page. Tetrex joins Tetris (from Roo) to give you two, yes two! ways to drain your batteries with that famous game.

Asteroids on the REX!?! (From Daniel)

"A new version of Asteroids is available. . . The game has grown to a size of three addins, but it is, hopefully, a lot more fun to play. I'm always happy getting some feedback and suggestions for future versions."

Daniel and Chris have broken the 8K add-in limit on the REX, "spanning" this new version of asteroids across three add-ins! The good news - more fun to play. The bad news - takes the space of three add-ins.

Electronic Ruler (From Ian)

"* Added extended 5mm, 1/2", 1/4", and 1/8" marks. (Chris Harris idea!)
* Converted to use Myles z88dk sdk. (Nice one Myles!)"

"I've written a handy electronic ruler for the Rex6000! Yes, it only mearsures 5cm/2inches! but hey! its free and jolly usefull! Measures in cm or inches!"

Memory Game add-in from Di.

"I wrote it using online SDK ( telnet+ftp ). See more on Setup SDK page."

Di's add-in is a fun matching game where you turn over tiles and try to match duplicates.

Programmer's calculator add-in. (From Di)

Both source code and the addin are available. It is a remake of DS2 SDK example. Di was one of the very early pioneers in REX 6000 technical investigation, and maintains a web-based REX SDK on his site. His site is well worth a look-see!

Tennis, Rexcade, Rexchange, Rexpense, Guitar Chords, Metronome, and Tasklean! (From Bertus)

Bertus has released more add-ins (seven as of 9/7/01) than any other developer!

Bertus has also generously provided the sourcecode for all of his add-ins on his site. In addition, he has additional support files

GolfCard, a golf score keeping utility! (From Dave)

Truly an excellent use for a REX - keeping your golf score was never so fun!

Othello (From Myles)

The addin and the C sdk it was created with can be downloaded from Myles' site. Now includes two-player functionality!

"Driver" For fun and programmer's information. (From Myles)

"Its a vertically scrolling driving game in a narrowing road. Shows the VScrollArea function in action and the use of DsTouchDataGet so that you can check the screen without causing code execution."

This is less a game and more a programming exercise, but it is pretty cool anyway.

Dwarf Gold (From Paul)

"I hacked out a little game called "Dwarf Gold" last night, which is available (with source). Its a "hunt the wumpus" derivative, but its not quite done yet. Its playable, just doesn't have all the features I want in it yet. However, I won't be able to do much programming this weekend, and wanted to get something out soon, so... The code is based on Myles' sdk stuff (many lines in dg.c should look the same!). Good work Myles!" (From Paul)

Solirex - eight (8!!) add-in games (in one add-in!) released by Amiram!

SoliRex is a single Rex 6000 add-in containing a suite of eight well-known solitaire games, including Klondike (also known simply as "Solitaire"), FreeCell, Pyramid, Pyramid Golf, Monte Carlo, Stonewall, Osmosis, and Aces Up.

SoliRex contains several features that are usually available in larger platforms, such as "Undo" and scoring. However, the Rex 6000 is not an ideal platform for games (or for any other software development, for that matter), so don't expect all the Bells and Whistles you get on a better platform.

Note that Amiram requires folks wanting to download Solirex to answer a few survey questions. He has promised to post the results of the survey at a later date.

SokoRex (From Alan)

"I have posted an addin, SokoRex, with source.

It is the Sokoban game orginated from Japan. Inside are 52 small but interesting maps. Feel free to play and/or give comments. (Developer note: During the development I discovered that we can add at most 40 events at a time. (and my addin has used exactly 40)"

Sokoban - now with 50 levels!! (From Shai)

"I have an improved version of the sokoban game with 50 levels! Also I have added some REX developer tools to my site for those who are interested. Based on SDK provided by M. Rix. Thanks! This is a tiny version of the Sokoban game. the rules are simple: just use the navigation arrows to move the tiny person arround and use him to push the boxes into their targets marked by a small circle. Pushing 2 boxes togather is imposible."

Please contact Shai if you'd have comments or would like additional levels created!

Space Invaders - (From Shai)

"I just posted a new add-in "Invaders" game in my site."

Webclean (From Damjan)

Use this great little add-in to remove web content from your REX.

Dictionary files available. (From Mojo)

"They aren't addins, but I hope it will be usefull anyway. I have put together some dictionary files to use with my REX. If you are interrested in trying them, you are welcome. The first one is from French to English and it is as simple as 27 memos with titles like "F-E xxx" where xxx is the first word in that memo. A good thing is to put your memos under categories since 27 memos more will make you scroll quite a lot. I'm planning to put more of them together but it will only be between english and some other languages. FYI these memos takes 29% of my memory...

. . . download them and drag-drop them into notes in outlook and sync... If someone would develop a search add if that could search these memos then..."

Mojo now has French to English (27 memos), English to French (18 memos), Italian to English (10 memos), and English to Swahili(1 memo!).

DS2 Add-ins Translated to English for the REX by Japanese DS2 developers <back to top>

Mr. Idogawa (a DataSlim2 add-in developer in Japan) discovered how to create English-language versions of Add-ins using the Dataslim2 Japanese SDK! His "experimental" page with his English-language add-ins is at:

http://www14.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/ka2/idogawa/addin_r.html.

You can find the following English-language add-ins at Mr. Idogawa's site:

Mr. Idogawa's main page (for Japanese-language add-ins) is at: http://www14.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/ka2/idogawa/index_e.html. Go to this page if you'd like to see his work on Japanese-language add-ins. Congrats to Mr. Idogawa for his creativity and excellent results!

Mr. Morotomi has created several English-language add-ins that can be found at his site (which he has graciously translated into English):

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~qn6o-mrtm/indexe.htm. (Click on the "Add-in Down Load" link.)

You can find the following English-language add-ins at Mr. Morotomi's site:

You can see Mr. Morotomi's original page in Japanese at: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~qn6o-mrtm/dsaddin.htm.

Note - Mr. Morotomi tends to leave his add-ins w/the same name - addin.ds2. You'll likely want to rename the files to something more descriptive.

"Froggy" has created three add-ins, one of which has been translated to English for use on the REX. Thanks to Mr. Idogawa for letting us know about this new add-in developer.

"The 4th (as far as I know) developer of add-ins for DS2 has appeared. The person (she?) made 3 DS2 add-ins:

  1. Omikuji (oracle) - Japanese only
  2. Couple (solitaire card game) - Cards are in English
  3. Pyramid (another solitaire) - English readme available
  4. SameGame (strategy game) - English readme available

While the former 2 add-ins use Japanese characters and may not be executable on REX, the latter one is designed to work also on Rex according to the author. From the BBS of CITIZEN:

'My name is Froggy. I made a game software "Pyramid" for REX6000. But I don’t have a REX6000. So I can’t test it. Do you have a REX6000? Would you test it on REX6000? Then tell me how is it, please. You can download it from "Download" page in my homepage.'

The page is here: http://homepage1.nifty.com/froggyHP/. The page is all written in Japanese, but I think you can find download page (click the daisy-look icon placed at near the right-bottom of the page), in which the add-ins are uploaded (also at near the bottom)."

Note - All of his/her add-in files have the same name - "addin.ds2." So after you extract them, rename the DS2 files so you know which is which.

DS2 Add-ins (Japanese Language) <back to top>

The Japanese Dataslim2 site where you can download Japanese-language DS2 Add-ins is:

http://dataslim.angel.co.jp/ds2/download_adin.htm

This site includes Ink Memo, Dice, Viewer, watch, and many others. You can use Babelfish to translate this page.

Add-ins that are in Japanese will display somewhat strangely on your REX. Insted of nice text you'll get a combination of black bars where the characters can't be displayed at all, some English text, and some icons that will look familiar (like an "X" close program icon). Remember that add-ins may be operated by a combination of screen taps and key presses, so you may have to experiment a bit.

Translations of some Japanese-language Add-in pages

Here are some translations of some Japanese add-in pages to help you decipher what they contain. May be useful if you'd like to play with some of the Japanese add-ins:

http://rhsjapanclub.clanhappy.com/page1.htm. Includes "Mole Mince Meat" aka Mogura, aka Whack-a-Mole!"

http://RHSJapanClub.clanhappy.com/page2.htm (Original site: http://dataslim.angel.co.jp/ds2/download_plugin01.htm)

Notes from the translator: For some reason I couldn't get the pictures to load when I tried it. Oh well. If you want to download the plug-in (and try to use it...heh) then click on the LACK OF PICTURE that's right next to the frame in the middle.

You can download the Add-ins in Japanese from their "native pages" below. Though the pages are primarily in Japanses, there is a limited amount of text in English which will allow you to identify what the Add-in does. You can also click here to go to www.babelfish.altavista.com and request a Japanese to English translation of the page. Copy the URL you want to see before you go, and paste that into the URL line at Babelfish, and then select Japanese to English in the translation selection dialog. Word of caution - sometimes these "machine" translations don't add much clarity, and you can only read on translated sites - the download links don't seem to work in translated pages! <g>

Add-in Download Pages

Visit the pages below for the most complete listings of add-ins available for the REX.

Myles' Add-in Download Page <back to top>

Myles maintains the most complete list of available add-ins, and adds a nice touch - he includes screen shots and icons give you a preview of what you're going to get!

David's Add-in Download Page

David has created a new REX web site, and is developing his own add-ins as well as listing available add-ins for download. An interesting feature allows you to vote on the add-ins you like best, and you can sort your view of the add-in list dynamically.

David's own add-ins include Image View and a new version of Snake.

How to Load Add-ins <back to top>

To load an Add-in:

  1. Extract the file ending in .DS2 or .REX from the downloaded ZIP or self-extracting EXE file into the
C:\program files\REX6000\REXTools directory. (You can load them to the REX from any directory, it's just easier if they are in the REX Tools directory.)
  2. Insert your REX 6000 into your PCCard slot, or your serial or USB cradle.
  3. Run REX Tools (Start/Programs/REX 6000/REX Tools) and simply use the File/Open menu command to open the .DS2 file(s) in your REXTools directory. (To see the .DS2 files in the File/Open dialog, you'll need to set the file specification to "all files.")

REXTools saves the file to your REX 6000 when you open it. Close REX Tools when you're done, and retrieve your REX, turn it on and tap on "Extras" on the main menu to see the Add-in(s) now available on your REX. From there it is a bit of trial and error to make these apps work. One exception is Mogura (see below) which uses English for its text.

Remember that you are limited to a maximum of 8 add-ins unless you are using the "Adder" add-in (see above on this page) to extend the storage capabilities of the REX.

How to Remove Add-ins <back to top>

On the REX: From the Main Menu select Controls, then Memory and then Extras. Then select the Add-in you want to remove. Since the titles are not in English you'll have to make sure you select the right one by looking at them on the "Extras" screen first.

In REX Tools: Highlight the Add-in you want to remove, right-click, and select "Delete" from the context menu. REX Tools will delete the file from your REX.

You can also delete add-ins using REX Tools. Insert your REX, start REX Tools, and select the add-in(s) you want to delete from the REX Tools display and hit your delete key. When using the Adder add-in, always use REX Tools to delete add-ins on your REX.

REXMail (From Chris F.) <Up>

Rexmail lets you WRITE and SEND emails on the Rex, RECIEVE and READ emails on the Rex, and transfer Inbox emails to the REX and Rexmails from the REX to Outlook or both. Rexmail has various filters to receive only the emails you want to e.g. filter by date, words in the subject, words in the sender's address etc. Rexmail syncronises the emails with your Outlook 98/2000 Inbox, and has a simple configuration to get you up and sync'ing uses a standard Windows' install/uninstall routine. Rexmail is compatable with Windows98/2000 operating systems and Outlook98/2000.

Price Information: There is a $10 registration fee if you want to keep using the program after 30 days.

Maillosaurus REX (From Dunqan.) <Up>

Program has three main functions:

  1. Copy unread e-mails from inbox (or from different Outlook's folder) to REX. You can convert defined number of e-mails into one note (it is often usefull).
  2. Send e-mails created in REX via Outlook. Using only your REX, you can add to your e-mails your signature, predefined QuickTexts and even... an atachments from your PC.
  3. Create formated documents via Microsoft Word. Using your REX you can create Word documents with different font styles, different font sizes and various aligment options. You can also specify many shortcuts that will be replaced with full text, before the document will be transfered to Word. You can even create in REX a Word document and send it as an atachment to the e-mail created also in your REX.

Maillosaurus REX can put Web content on your REX!! (from AntMelNat) <Up>

"I have been testing Maillosaurus REX (the Outlook email transfer program - see Dana's help page) and have found it useful. It moves emails from the Outlook Inbox to the notes section, which gets transferred to the REX at the next sync. It will also take emails created in the REX, after syncing, and place them in the Outlook Outbox. It can also be told to send an attachment along with the email note.

Although I wouldn’t read and write email in the R6K very often, I have found an extremely valuable use for this program. I am on several daily email lists, which deliver news stories, bible verses, word-for-the-day, etc. to my Inbox and this program moves them to the R6K without having to cut-and-paste them.

One of my concerns, if Intel does not continue the REX line, is the loss of the web content. Using the Maillosaurus REX program, I have been able to get my own web content into the R6K quicker than a rex.net sync. This should work to get web content into the R5K as well.

I have found a source that will email personalized content daily at infobeat.com (see below). It does not format the text as well as rex.net, but it does work very well and has hundreds of options. No movie listings yet but you can get T.V. listing for your area (see below).

If you configure Maillosaurus REX to transfer each email sepperately, the notes title in the REX will be the email's subject. An added plus is that each story (note) can be deleted after being read, something you can't do with rex.net. If anyone knows of other email news services like infobeat.com, please post them."

AOL email on your REX. (From Jack)

"Bizarre, but true. Start with these two ingredients:

  1. Outlook
  2. MailosaurusREX or REXmail...either one is fine, although mREX has a custom folder feature, while the other does not.
  3. Add an equal amount of eNetBot Mail (www.enetbot.com [Allows you to send and receive AOL™ Mail from any standard email program])
  4. Stir and synch.

In theory, eNetBot should work with damn near any kind of PDA, but YMMV. Seems to work well on the REX though, using the above method."

New email tools developed for the REX. (From Mihail)

"I have written a couple of macros to transfer e-mails to REX. As I hope I will do something else sometime, I have made also a special web page - www.rex6000.narod.ru, where you can find them. It may become also a Russian Rex 6000 web page (as I could not find any existing), but usually I am so lazy..."

Enhancements to MailtoNotes macro released (By Greg)

"I've enhanced Mihail's "MailToNotes()" macro for Outlook 2000 and posted it on my site. I'm working with Mihail on a common distribution point (much like other open-source projects), but until then, it's available on my site.

I've added many capabilities. First is a "Preferences" section which allows you to modify its functionality easily without digging into the code. The code has been hardened and optimized, so it's faster and handles error conditions better. It also multitasks nicely, so you can keep using Outlook while it works. The auto-remove option now handles two different lifespans for notes, so you can split your notes into "daily" and "weekly" items.

Read the comments in the source for more information. To install it, download the zip file and load the included bas file into Outlook's VB editor. You will need to modify some of the constants in the Preferences section to fit your configuration. The most important is the folder name in which it will look for new mail to transfer."

AOL et. al. on your REX (redux). (From Jack)

By popular request, Jack is back with a little more detail on his AOL (and other) REXploits:

"I'm a masochist for getting AOL in one form or another, on one weird device or another. Haven't figured out how to get it on my microwave yet, but I created one of the first kludges for getting AOL on a Windows CE device, using a DOS emulator, and the old DOS version of AOL. (Every time I think back to those days...I feel the need for a strong drink...)

Anyway, in pursuit of this odd compulsion of mine, I've always got this sort of thing in the back of my mind. When I started playing with mREX (mailosaurus REX), it worked with Outlook, turning mail into Memos, and Memos into mail, allowing a person to write and receive email on a REX.

Well, then there's a piece of software that allows AOL users to get their AOL mail in Outlook. The program is called eNetBot Mail (www.enetbot.com).

Therefore:

eNetBot + Outlook + mREX (or Inetllisync) = AOL email on your REX 6000

Throw in: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/internet-services/access-via-email/ and you've got an opportunity to get really weird with your REX. And don't forget AvantGo (www.avantgo.com), or PageGetter (www.pagegetter.com). Anything you can do by email, you can do with the REX, for the most part! You can send FAXES using services like VillageFax.net (www.villageedocs.net), MaxEmail (www.maxemail.com) or the Symantec Fax Starter Edition that comes with some editions of Outlook.

REXKeys - REX Keyboard modifier! (From Paul) <Up>

You can use Paul's program to modify the REX.BIN firmware file and then update the firmware on your REX using REX Tools. This is a great development for REX users who want characters on their REX that aren't supported by the current, US-centric firmware. Note - it's probably best that you play with this only if you're comfortable with computers! There are REXkeys templates for over 12 languages (e.g., German, Greek, Russian, Czech, Polish, Swedish, and Hungarian, etc!)! More are added periodically, so check back for updates.

March 15, 2002 - RexKeys 2.0 released!

"RexKeys 2.0 is much more comfortable than the old version. There are separated template files for the characters and the keyboard layout. On my page you can have a look on screenshots of the original keyboard and 12 modified layouts including Greek and Russia. I know the very first version did not work with DockPatch. I don't know about the next version, I heared about some difficulties. Today I tested RexKeys 2.0 with the "dockpatched" REX.BIN, and it worked without any problem.

Some people asked me if they can create a Thai, Hebrew or Arabic keyboard. I added some comments about this issue on my page."

REX.BIN (the REX firmware file) can be found in our Software Updates section. See below for info regarding using REXKeys and Dockpatch together.

Dockpatch - operate your REX in the serial cradle (From Chris) <Up>

"Enables Rex 6000 to be operated while inserted in the serial docking cradle. With source code." For users who spend a good portion of their day working at their desk, this allows them to have the REX plugged into the Serial cradle (using the batteries in the cradle for power!) while using it at their desk! Some have even disconnected the serial cradle from it's cable and used the cradle as a sort of portable external power pack for the REX!

And even more good news on Dockpatch - works w/USB cradle! (From QC)

"hi Chris, DockPatch works in the USB cradle perfectly. thank you very much for all your high quality add-ins. i hope that your difficult time will be over soon and your family is well."

March 23, 2002: Dockpatch updated - "Mr. REX" does it again... (From Chris)

Chris always makes us go "Oh wow - I want it!!" when he releases one of his REX enhancements. This time he's updated Dockpatch so that it can be loaded via an add-in, rather than via a firmware update. Easier, safer, and cooler, too! Dockpatch allows you to use your REX while inserted in the serial cradle - turning the serial cradle into a kind of external battery pack for the REX. Great for playing battery hungry games, or if you want to keep your REX on your desk during the day. You can still use your cradle for syncing when you need to.

"Hi all, I saw David Elsing's post and website http://david.student.utwente.nl/Rex6000/powerpack/index.php about removing the serial cable from the docking station, brought back memories of my first Rex (the battery-hungry kind), and painfully reminded me that DockPatch was long overdue some updating, so:

DockPatch 1.0 is essentially the same as the original DockPatch except it is now installed via an addin, instead of via a patched Rex.bin. Just load the DockPatch addin on your Rex (BUT NOT IN ADDER), run it once, and you're all set. Also, if you execute it again, it uninstalls DockPatch - which may help if there is ever a concern that DockPatch may be causing problems on your Rex, although I'm not aware of any.

I have also shortened the timeout: when you insert your Rex in the cradle and it displays DockPatch, you now have only about 2 seconds to press a key to abort the Rex "Ready" prompt - you gotta be quick! I did this to address the problem where DockPatch slows down initiation of the sync process during the (previous) 5 second DockPatch delay.

Oh yeah - if anybody is successfully using DockPatch in the USB cradle, please let me know! In the past, I have told quite a few folks that it works only in the serial cradle without any evidence to the contrary."

Using RexKeys and Dockpatch together. (From Zdenek)

Using RexKeys with DockPatch - I am not sure what happend with your Rex, but I thing the correct way to use both patches is:

1. Prepare your localisation file from original (not patched) Rex.bin using RexKeys.exe
2. Use Extract.exe to export .RKX file
3. To fresh original Rex.bin apply DockPatch (or download patched Rex.bin)
4. Apply .RKX file using RexKeys to Rex.bin with DockPatch.
5. Load Rex.bin with both patches to Rex.

If you don't pretend to create .RKX, you can use RekKeys.exe directly to Rex.bin with DockPatch. Paul Lenz (the brave auhor of RexKeys) can explain workabout for creating .RKX in this case. Workabout is a little bit complicated and I don't remember it."

Martin was curious if Rexkeys and Dockpatch could be used together on the REX (both update the firmware). Zdenek replies:

"I am using both RexKeys and DockPatch patches. It works fine. If you wish to export your RekKeys data to .RKX file, use the RexKeys first and save Rex.bin produced for future corections to your localisation."

Cradle surgery + Dockpatch = REX power supply. (From David)

Others have mentioned doing this, but no one has documented it so completely - for those REX gamers who are tired of burning up CR2016s:

"Hi! I'm new around here, but a had some inspiration to make a power battery pack out of my craddle. I used my first set of batteries in 10 days, so this can be a bit of relief.

http://david.student.utwente.nl/Rex6000/powerpack/index.php

I hope it's helpfull."

A program for users of the REX who speak German! (Thanks, Donni!) <Up>

"I wrote a small program that downloads and converts the news of heise-newsticker (a famous german computer magazine) to outlook-notes that can be transfered to the rex by intellisync. Old news articles are deleted if you fetch the new ones. My program (hNews for Rex) is very simple and still beta but I think a lot of German users will like it.

You can download it at: http://home.t-online.de/home/donni Feel free to distribute it in any way you like - it's freeware."

New REX image tool from the author of REXRunt (From Benjamin)

"Once upon a time Dana wrote:

> Add me to the list of amazed Rexrunt users. <g>
> Can you puleeze do a bit more work so I can display my own bitmaps?

Several others have made similar requests. My intention was to allow loading of images from files, but I've been a little busy, apparently for 6 months.. I have however created a picture to add-in converter which is probably satisfactory for most people. It's at:

http://www.lh.co.nz/software/rex/PicToRex.zip"

DK's "customer testimonial:"

"Those who remember excellent 'RexRunt' demo addin from Benjamin know what great opportunities it offered to display greyscale pictures on your Rex.

This time Benjamin has released a Windows tool - 'PicToRex'- enabling us (non-developers) to easily hardcode our OWN photo into an addin and enjoy it in the Rex in four shades of grey.

It's very easy to use...with just a few mouse clicks it generates an addin with your photo. You may generate as many addins with different photos as you like and load them all at once into Rex. They all run perfectly. I also tried loading them into the Adder...works fine. Thanks, Benjamin."

REX icons for your Windows desktop!

Otavio has created some really beautiful REX icons to REX-up your Windows desktop.

"Here you can see some cool icons for Windows I made - they are free to distribute."

Otavio includes a readme.txt file to allow you to associate your rex files with whichever of these icons you prefer. Download the zip file with the icons and his instructions and have fun.
