Another REX-sized PDA. (From DK)
"One more credit card size PDA
The information on the site was released in December, 2001. Tubalips noted that the product does not seem to be listed on the company's web site at: http://www.brilliantsystem.com/. It could be that they only OEM it to other resellers, or that they have already discontinued the product.
Mac / Palmsycn to REX 6000 conversion process w/out using Outlook. (From Hanno)
"Workaround Mac / Palm sync to Rex6000 from a new Rex User
Proabably the most complicated way to get my Palm data to the Rex via my Powerbook Mac (I don`t have a PC or an Outlook Calendar), but it finally worked:
PalmPilot -> PalmDesktop on Virtual PC -> TrueSync PalmDesktop with Yahoo (Virtual PC) -> IntelliSync Yahoo with Rex via PC-Card Slot of Powerbook (Virtual PC). There should be a straight TrueSync Option to sync PalmDesktop, Yahoo and Rex in one go - however, TrueSync can`t communicate with the Rex with my settings (neither PC-card slot nor USB cradle).
This is too complicated for every day sync, but it was good for a start to transfer my data, the only problem being the repeated events coming from Yahoo to the Rex in 2 weeks instead of 2 day repeats and so on."
For a simpler process using Outlook, see the section in the REX FAQ on Upgrading from other PDAs to the REX 6000.
More on the Citizen Datasync Card - "confirmation" of Citizen's intent to market it outside Japan! (From Antmelnat)
"The below translation (via http://www.alis.com) of the ZDNet Japan article:
concerning the Citizen "Wireless DataSync Card" reveals that it will be marketed "abroad" and "this product doesn't do only Japan in a target". We will have to wait and see what their definition of "abroad" is."

Will the new Citizen PDA be sold outside Japan? We can dream, can't we?
Magnus recently forwarded another URL for the recently publicized Citizen Datasync Card PDA (discussed in previous news items here and here) that many of us have hope might be our next PDA after the REX 6000. The page included a contact email address, so this reporter asked if the new PDA will make it's way outside Japan:
"Thank you for connection. The sale time of this product, a price, etc. are undecidedness now. Moreover, please understand that it may become specification change at the time of the last goods.
CITIZEN WATCH CO.,LTD."
Not exactly a yes, or a no, or even a maybe. Hopefully more to follow.
Mediavault price update. (From Roel)
"Just a quick little remark: the Mircotech Mediavault isnt cheapest @ www.outpost.com (which now prices it $25, BTW), but at www.d-store.com. It is sold at $10 over there."

Anyways, just thought you might be interested. Thanks for those who signed in at my guestbook. Your comments do keep me motivated to upload more ebookz."
Dictionary page coming soon.
For fans of the dictionary add-in, John (the creator of the add-in) will be setting up a page on his site soon that will provide the download of the add-in, and links to the other relevant sites (e.g., GPF's utility, Gerd's dictionary files). He hopes to have it up by sometime this weekend.

[email protected]"Still more Dictionary action going on!
From GPF:
I wrote an utility program that can generate data/index files used by JDF's Dictionary addin. The program and an En-En data file(from QC Tang) can be found here:
The input is a text file with all words pre-sorted. The program then break this big file into many smaller files basing on a size you specify. (In order to put those files into Outlook, the size shall be <= 32K.) The program also generates an index file. You may want to modify it manually to change dictionary description, catogery name etc.
The program was done in VS.NET, only tested under win2k. Please let me know if you run into any problem."
From Gerd:
"I have the same problem with Outlook. You can import them [dictionary text files] through rextools but you will have to set the categories on the rex which is a little painful. You might also have to change the memo names to upper case.
Apparently it isn't widely known that I have already 100 sets of dictionary files for John's addin at
So far only English<->Other. But you can ask for any pair you need and I will make them. At the moment the files are not yet 100% compatible with John's. The filenames are different and the index file is slightly different. But I am working on an update to make them 100% compatible. They should be ready tomorrow."
Dictionary project updated. (From John)
"RE: DICTIONARY PROJECT
If you tried it and sent me feedback, please try again! I just uploaded a new version at
It is a little faster and I think much more stable.
It is basically done. I don't expect to make much more improvement to it!!"
Find and Encrypt Memo updated! (From Gerd)
"Two updates:
- after a search the screensaver timer is now set to 0. This should prevent a sleeping rex at the end of the search. Please report whether this works !
- up/down now moves the display by 7 lines (i.e. a whole display)
- the 4 'memos' have now changable names (up to 4 characters)
- tiny speedupPlease read the readme and report problems with old files!"
SunMoon add-in updated. (From Daverex)
"Hi all!

Developer news: Rexdk updated again. (From Daniel)
"Hi all,
The updated rexdk is now available. The library-signature is now inserted at the beginning of the bin-file. It is possible to test and debug library addins in the emulator. [Very cool!] For details see the readme file. As usual everything is handled in the make file. Just one click to compile the library and one for the client..."

Encrypt Memo bugfix release. (From Gerd)
"Encrypt 0.4 is a bugfix release (many thanks to Myster !!!) of the encrypted memo addin. Now deleting more lines than there are does not lead to a crash at closing the addin.
Developer news: New version of Rexdk released. (From Daniel)
"Some good news from the rexdk front.. I've rewritten the farcall/library mechanism again. Feature list:
- No need to rebuild the client-addin if the library is updated/extended.
- Farcall mechanism is now re-entrant, so it is possible to call from library routines into other libraries.
- "Unlimited" parameter passing between functions. (ints, longs, doubles,..)
Library routines are now called through a switch-function. This function can also be used to implement a fall-through mechanism to find functions in other libs. Details in the readme file.
I've also implemented Waleed's graphic routines."
Developer and user goodies from Waleed
Waleed is one of the REX developer communities more active members. He has contributed to the discussions around building reusable libraries to enhance add-in functionality, and has created tools to share with the other developers. He's a busy guy...
"Thanks to Myles both my DisAssembler & the ASM graphics library are now on REX Extras - DEVELOPER TOOLS
I'm putting up a simple web site to hold everything in one place & have a place to "say it to the world!" too!! :)
I've started many AddIns & plan to publish them all may be someone would be interested to finish them. I hardly have time now! I'm organizing, commenting things & I'll upload the rest of them ASAP.
The AddIns are:
- A Chess board + supporting routines WITH SOURCE (for some reason no one publish chess sources!?!?)
- A Multi-Alarm, nice looking DeskTop clock with REX in the Serial dock!
- Muslim Quibla direction - give your long & lat & the AddIn will point to Makka.
- Muslim Prayer time schedular - calculate prayer time for any place in the world at any day/week/month. [this one is very complecated - still trying to get it working in 8k!!]
- More ASM graphics routines.
- N equation solver.
- BattleShip board game.
- Chess puzzles (reads puzzle data from memo.)
Most of them are already working - but not fully implemented or user interface is not done!"
DS2 cases arrive at final two volunteer distributors.
The arrival of the DS2 cases has been confirmed today by the volunteer distributors in the mid-west and east. They were the last two distributors awaiting their cases to ship out to folks in their regions. Cases for the western US have been shipped. So, all cases are on their way to their owners (or will be within a few days). Thanks for your patience, and enjoy your case(s).
Thanks very much to the volunteer distributors for their help in getting the cases delivered.
Updated CalPlanner add-in works like a charm! (From Myles)
"Re: CalPlanner
Many thanks to all those who have provided feedback here and via email. I believe many of the "hanging" eggtimers were due to longer named diary events than I'd allowed for. I've put an amended version on rexextras that includes this fix. It also includes a progress bar as it is reading the events so that you have some visual feedback and can tell if it is hung or simply progressing slowly. I've various other enhancements that are needed but I wanted to get out a more useful version to check if the basic functionality problems are now sorted. Please let me know how it goes, particularly if it hung before on your rex."
Works like a charm, from all reports noted so far. Try it - this is another add-in (like Adder and CalPatch) that make provide functionality that the REX always should have had! This is a "must-have" add-in for any REX user.
Suggested fix for weird REX behavior. (From Greg)
"For those of you who are experiencing mysterious crashes in your REX 6000, you may have a corrupt timezone database. Go into the World Clock, and look at the locations available. If they have all disappeared, then you will need to reload the database. Symptoms of this problem are mysterious crashes when using built-in functionality, and the REX not being able to keep the correct time.
Get the file at http://gregsearle.tripod.com/rex_tips.html"
The file Greg refers to contains the basic 31 cities/timezones that are included with the REX software, and is loaded to the REX with REX Tools. See the REX World Clock section of our New User Setup page for more info about the REX World Clock and the two ways to add (or remove) cities from your REX.

New version of Encrypt Memo add-in. (From Gerd)
"New version 0.3 of the encrypted memo addin.
This one has a changed screen layout (in preparation for changable names!) and does not need the upload of BMP files. It creates them itself. It should be compatible with existing encrypted files, but I won't guarantee that. So, just in case, please backup your files before using this one."
Swiss Army Brands connection for DS2 case pen option. (From Richard)
"The Swiss Army Brands importer/distributor for the United States can be reached at 1-800-442-2706.
Richard also provided the URL for the Swiss Army replacement parts web site.
DS2 case shipping update.
DS2 cases have arrived for some users in Europe, and have been shipped to users in Canada, Israel, Australia, and Singapore. Unfortunately, some US users are still wating for their cases.
The US mail has not worked smoothly (or at least not consistently). Cases mailed to two volunteer distributors in the east and midwest haven't arrived as of today, days after cases mailed the same day to Canada and another east coast distributer have arrived and been sent on. Not sure why the two shipments are going so much slower, but if you are in the midwest or east coast, it will take a bit longer for them to get there.
For those in the western US, cases are going out tomorrow. In this case the delay is purely my fault - my apologies. I put them in my trunk to mail on Thursday of last week, and while running several errands simply forgot to take them to the post office. Discovered them in the trunk this weekend when my battery died (bad karma result?). They will be mailed Tuesday - promise! (Monday is a US holiday, so no mail.)
And a reminder - sorry, but there are no additional DS2 cases available, and no plans to complete another group order. If you would like to do so yourself, you'll need to find a contact in Japan to place the order with Citizen and then ship the cases from Japan to your location. As far as we know it is not possible to order them from Citizen from outside Japan.
DS2 case review and stylus idea. (From Laurens)
"After a week of using the DS2 case (mine is 'white') I can only say I like it a lot. The plastic feels strong and quite protective, yet it could probably take a fall because it's not too hard and brittle. Screen protection is OK though I would like to see a really stiff piece of more transparent plastic. Can't have it all I guess.
As for the missing stylus: I am going to drill a little hole in the right hand top side. A small nylon cylinder should fit there, just next to the rex is some space left; Swiss knife company Victorinox even has a stylus in the right size readily available I think (I have a pocket knife with a ball point pen in there which is the right size; they have a PDA stylus replacement for that. Just have to find out how to get it). Anyone Swiss here?"
As soon as someone works out a stylus setup for the DS2 cases, it's a sure thing that other DS2 case users would love to see a few pictures and "how to" notes.
SunMoon add-in bug-fix planned. (From DaveRex)
"There is a bug in SunMoon when a new zodiacal sign starts (like today, Pisces starting). Tomorrow the data will be OK again. I try to fix it as soon as possible (before Aries, March 20th... I hope ! ;->). I will work also on some minor bugs like the strange order of events when moon rises/sets in the previous/following day, freezing of REX if the date of REX is in the past of your detailed events, etc.
Thanks to all SUNMOON users (and BETA-testers) for their help and supporting words."
CalPlanner add-in released. (From Myles)
"New addin: CalPlanner (At www.rexextras.net). This will read the calendar database and show the 30 next upcoming events in your diary. It has some limitations but I thought Id release a demo and ask for feedback. The current limitations are:
- Repeat events only annual is catered for. I.e., Daily and weekly dont work yet
- Speed it takes a few seconds to read and sort the diary events (I believe I can speed this up the events in the diary are typically in an approximate date order and if I reverse the sort logic it should benefit from this)
My wish list of features is:
- Adjust the base date (currently uses todays date)
- Click an event to jump to the firmware day view
Let me know what you think."
Dictionary 7b released. (From John/Myster)
"RexDictionary v0.7b :
John Del Ferro released another version of rexdic. All RexDic fans can get it from here.
From what i have noticed is that is double fast at loading and searching and has some cosmetic fixes If anyone finds any Bugs it should probably be better to report them to John so he can have a look at them."
German REX 6000 page! (From Juergen)
"D-REX - New german info-page for REX6000
I am a german REX-user! Because it is very difficult to find information about the rex in german, I have made a German info-page. It contains all nessesary info about hardware, software, firmware, addins, batteries and so on. German language only! Link: http://www.people.freenet.de/circuit/d-rex.htm
I hope it will help new users (like me a few weeks ago)! Comments are welcome!"
There is also a German REX Forum, for those who are interested.
