Major Differences Between the REX 6000 and REX 5000
REX Pro/5000 features "missing" from the REX 6000:
- Soft/loud click control (6000 has only one volume)
- Short/long alarm option (6000 has only one alarm length)
- 'Display this number' functionality (6000 defaults to work number)
- Automatic updates for Daylight savings time
- The word 'Free' that appears in day view when you have no appointment on a particular day
- Ability to schedule meeting with a Contact (6000 can't link meetings to your Contact info)
- Intelligent submenus for alphabetical index (Pro only expands alphabet index if you have more than one screen of entries for that letter; 6000 will always expand to the Aa level)
- Ability to display company names alongside regular people's names (if you have company names they show up as a long list of commas when you first open Contacts)
- Ability to temporarily reset the clock while traveling (Pro had this in the World Clock feature)
REX 6000 features REX Pro/5000 lacks:
- Touchscreen for input/navigation
- Full touchscreen/stylus editing of content, including both data and categories
- Sorting by categories (allows syncing from more than four folders of Contacts/Memos in Outlook)
- Add-in programs that can add games, utilities, and other tools to the REX (see our Add-in and SDK pages for more on that subject)
- Ability to move between screens with out closing them (e.g., can move from a contact to calendar screen and then back to the original contact screen using silk-screened navigation buttons without closing either screen)
- Additional memory - 2MB available, vs 512K on REX Pro/5000 (4MB total - 2MB for firmware, 2MB for data). Note that the REX 6000 is available in a 1MB model as well outside the US.
- Ability to store and browse downloadable web content. Until 9/1/01 the REX could be sync'd with Xircom's REX.NET site to get news stories, movie reviews and local movie listings, etc. Now that Xircom has discontinued this service, review our Web Sync page for options provided by other REX users.
- Built in calculator - been waiting for this since the REX 3!!
- Flash memory means data will stay intact if batteries die or are removed
- Upgradeable firmware (via download from Xircom). With Intel discontinuing the REX, there will be no firmware updates from Xircom/Intel. However, a copy of the current firmware is available on our Software Updates page for those who may need to re-flash their REX. Also, REX Keys (a utility to modify the language/characters used on your REX keyboard) requires use of this file to update your REX. See our Add-ins page for more on REX Keys.
- "Current items" screen accessible from main menu that lists current To-do's and any calendar events for that day that are pending. (I.e., if it is 4:00 any appointments earlier than 4:00 are not listed. There is also the traditional "day" view that contains all calendar events for a given day.)
- Ability to password protect memos on the REX
- 240x120 screen resolution
