XIRCOM REX 6000 Release 1.01 February 20, 2001 ================================================================= CONTENTS ======== 1) REX 6000 Hardware 2) REX 6000 Installer 3) REX 6000 Firmware and REX Tools 4) Intellisync Synchronization 5) REX.NET 6) Machine Specific Notes 7) OS Specific Issues 8) Xircom Technical/Sales Support 1) REX 6000 HARDWARE ================= -Toshiba Laptops running on WIN 98SE If you are using a NECPCI to USB open host controller for USB, you will need to install the software first before installing the USB drivers for the USB Cradle. To verify the controller, select Start/Settings/Control Panel/System, and click on the Device Manager tab. Then click on the + sign next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers to verify the type of controller the system is using. 2) REX 6000 INSTALLER ================== This release does not support auto launch. The user must start the install from the START/RUN window and Browse to the CD-ROM drive containing the REX 6000 installation program. If you have chosen to install Intellisync Mobile Desktop (ISMD), setup will launch and then close ISMD. After ISMD is closed, the progress display (checkmarks and progress bar) is not properly updated, so the text disappears. This is an aesthetic side effect and does not affect the installation. REX Device Detection: -The REX is detected as a 'standard modem' when inserted into the PC Card slot, however, it is still fully functional. 3) REX 6000 FIRMWARE and REX TOOLS =============================== The default view lists contacts by last name. Contact entries of only a company name (no last name, first name) are not visible in this view. To view the entries, view by company name. Key Recognition: -After 38 characters, the user may experience a 'slow down' in key recognition. This occurs in all applications with an edit note screen. Wrapping of Text: -Text may not wrap correctly in Memos, Tasks, and Note fields. For example: 3133 Foothill Road Ventura California, 93003 Would be displayed: 3133 Foothill Road Ventura, California, 93 003 REX TOOLS: Flashing or initializing the device: -When using REX Tools to update the firmware or initialize the REX, be sure to: -Disable any screen savers -Disable Power Management -Close all other applications -Leave the PC undisturbed during the process 4) INTELLISYNC SYNCHRONIZATION =========================== Power Save Mode: -If the REX is left idle for a period of time, it may power off. If you cannot sync, the REX can be powered on by removing and reinserting it into the Serial or USB Docking Station. PIMS: -The REX 6000 supports the following PIMS: Intellisync Mobile Desktop and MS Outlook 97, 98, 2000. No other PIMS are supported. Auto Mapping: -Intellisync for REX now auto maps the main system sections. Also, the main system sections have changed from 6 Categories to 4. The two categories that have been removed are, Anniversary and Event. 5) REX.NET ======= Creating a profile: -Create a user login and password. The subsequent screens will allow you to create a profile. In certain screens there are either Add or Save options. Any screen with a Save option must be used or you will lose your customization. Syncing with REX: -When syncing with your device, please be patient and follow these steps: -Insert your REX device into the serial cradle, PCMCIA slot, or USB if supported. -Launch Intellisync For REX (IS4R). -Select Preferences and make sure REX.Net Sync and Show REX.Net Login is selected (you will have to open the window each time to do this). -Select the Synchronization button. -In the REX.NET login window, enter your REX.NET user login and password. -If you are using a proxy, select Advanced and enter your login and password. -Select Save password and select Login. Note: The sync may be slow so please be patient and do not attempt to stop the task in the Task Manager even though it may state it is not responding. -The following steps will occur next... -Receive a REX.NET data transfer window. -In the window it will state, "Be patient this process may take several minutes". -As the sync process begins, REX will jump between Ready and Synchronization states. -When the process completes, you will be returned to the IS4R screen. IS4R will state "Saving Synchronization History". Let the function complete prior to removing REX from the cradle or PCMCIA slot. Viewing your download results: -Select the WEB icon on the Main screen or Hot Keys Menu. You will see your profile download selections. 6) MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES ====================== -All Acer Computers will have conflicts when using Intellisync Mobile Desktop. Therefore, the following procedure needs to be performed prior to installation of REX 6000 software. 1. From Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, Remove Intellisync 2. Remove the folder c:\Program Files\Intellisync 3. Using RegEdit, remove the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\StartMenu \&Programs\Intellisync 4. Using RegEdit, remove the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs 5. Using RegEdit, remove the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Puma Infrared Stack 6. Remove the folder c:\Program Files\common\puma shared 7. Delete the file c:\windows\system\pumaser.vxd. -Toshiba Satellite 2180CDT Attempting to install the USB Cradle drivers causes the Computer to lock up with the Windows 98SE operating system.
