What to do if my REX, or REX Tools, or Intellisync keeps
crashing or locks up when you try to sync.
From a REX Rumor Central contributor (thanks MK!) who talked
to Xircom about his troubles. Here's what he got, and it fixed his problems.
Read the whole page before you do anything!
Before you embark on the extensive steps below, try one simple
fix to repair a REX that is crashing, or a REX Tools that won't start successfully.
- Insert your REX into your cradle or PCCard slot
- Start REX Tools WHILE HOLDING DOWN
THE LEFT SHIFT KEY!!
- Use REX Tools to Initialize the REX (this clears all data
and settings on the REX)
- Close REX Tools and start Intellisync
- Reconfigure Intellisync (all settings are lost when you
initialize the REX) and sync your REX
For some users, this will do the trick. If it doesn't help
you, dive into the more detailed and complete steps below. Good luck!!
Ok, for everybody who is experiencing crashing REX, REXTools
crashing so you can't reset your REX, crashing Intellisycn, etc.), the following
fix seems to work. Problem is, it requires editing your Windows Registry. If
you don't understand what that means, probably best to stop now and find your
friend who does "get it" and ask him/her to help. Here goes ...
- Uninstall for Rex6000 software/USB Docking station.
- Uninstall everything in Add/Remove Programs that relates
to Xircom and Rex. Also uninstall the listings for
the Xircom Rex USB docking station if they are listed also. If you are ever
prompted do NOT restart the computer.
- Delete the Rex6000 folder from C:\Program
Files
- Search your local harddrive for rex* and delete any of the
following files that are found within the C:\Windows\System (or C:\WinNT\System)
and C:\Windows\System32 (or C:\WINNT\System32):
- REX.DLL
- REXDB.DLL
- REXSERA.SYS
- REXSERE.SYS
- REXSERU1.INI
- REXSNUM.VXD
- rexuinst.exe
- REXSERPG.DLL
- REXSERPG.HLP
- REXVCD.VXD
- REXVSERD.VXD
- RexResource.DLL
- REXShared.DLL
- REXTool.DLL
|
- NOTE: If any of these files are in use (and Windows will
tell you if they are when you try to delete them) skip them for now and go
on thru step 6 (Restart Computer) and then repeat this step after the restart
until they are all gone.
- Open Regedit (Start > Run > type REGEDIT). Be very careful
here - you can really muck up your Windows installation if you screw up your
registry.
- Delete the following keys in the registry. Remove the following
registry entries:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareXIRCOM
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareREX 6000
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSESAppIDRexPro xy.EXE

- Restart your computer
- Re-install REX 6000 software
- Plug in USB docking station (if you are
using it)
- Follow the Hardware Wizard for the USB install - tell it
to look for the drivers in C:WindowsSystem (C:WINNTSystem32 for WIN2K). They
should be there on your system by default after the REX/Intellisync software
installation. If they are not found, then tell the hardware wizard to look
in the subfolder on the CD that matches your Operating System.
- Insert the REX 6000 into the docking station/PC slot.
- Run REXTOOLS WHILE HOLDING DOWN
THE LEFT SHIFT KEY!! Then initialize
the card.
- Configure Intellisync for REX and procede normally.
The most important part of the whole procedure is HOLDING
DOWN THE LEFT SHIFT KEY while starting
RexTools.
